Porta Power pack

Following the discussion last week about these items, and the one I bought from Makro for 25 quid...Could anything this small and cheap be of any use? I have to report that I used it on Saturday

So there I was on board Fairweather with Kids plus kids friend plus Dog having done 2 trips from the jetty in the dinghy with enough gear to do an Atlantic crossing.

Guess what... the batteries didnt have sufficient power to swing the engine (Perkins 4108)

Hooked up the Power Pack which took all of 3 mins and tried again. Moment later engine is running everybody is smiling and Im thinking that this is the best 25 quid Ive ever spent as its rescued our weekend.

Used it again next morning at Cowes due to similar situ and.. Yes, I will be buying 4 new batteries.

I bought one from argos at the beginning of last season, they are invaluble, mines got little cigar lighter socket, plus the croc. clips run the tv off it, and it also starts 3.5 litre engine no probs!!!!!!

I saw them in Makro and reckoned they would be far too small to swing a diesel.

I'm off to get one right now.

Nick.. thats what I thought and all the informed opinion said that it wouldnt be up to the job ....hence my suprise. It also started my wife's diesel Mondeo with similar ease when the battery died on that last week... Regards Nick

Makro is a cash and carry chain.. you have to have a card to use it as its "trade only", but as far as I can tell every one has a friend who knows someone with one.

I think they started up as general grocery supplier but have gone on to sell all sorts of things, including electrical tools. V cheap.

Is this one of those that has a 12v socket, and can be recharged from the mains??

Have been looking at them for a while, but thought them a bit pricey as all the ones i ahve seen are about £90+
