PORT SOLENT THEFT

Two weeks ago I arrived at the boat to find the drives and props covered in a mass of barnacles, a problem that seems to have affected many boats in P.S. this year. The boat had only been lifted and antifouled in late May!!

I arranged to have the boat lifted and cleaned.

You can imagine my surprise when the boat was lifted last Thursday to receive a call from the yard to tell me I had a problem!

The port leg gear box cover was missing.

Now the cover was on the leg 10 days ago and the boat had not moved from its berth since that date. It had not fallen off nor had I removed it! I can only assume it has been stolen. This theory was further enforced when I ordered a new cover from Volvo...... and the price £620.00 inc VAT!

Reported to Police... but as yet not even a call to make an enquiry.

Security is pretty lax at P.S. and although the new entry system has been installed, bridgehead 1 has a key pad entry(for sunsail customers). I telephoned the office without giving a name and was given the code.... is it any wonder

You've all been warned.

That is contemptable. Does PS not have video surveillance? If not, I would suggest in no uncertain terms they could afford it. These days it is very inexpensive compared to ,say, 5 years ago. Was the boat left out for 10 days in an open area?

I hope the bearings all break up for the guy who stole it.

It's beyond belief if marinas don't have full 24 hour video monitoring these days, relative to the investments they are caring for, (and charging for), it's for nothing.

P.S. do have 24 hour security, however it only really covers the bridgehead gates.
Its easy enough for someone to stuff something into a kit bag and saunter off.

Makes me wonder what happened to a few other items that have "gone missing" that I've put down to my own carlessness.. Hmmmm.

Let me get my head round this, the bridgeheads where there are security gates have surveillance, but not the open yard area where boats worth hundreds of thousands are not only on display but also conveniently chocked up in rows for all to plunder? Right next to where you can park a van or car? Well that is handy isn't it?

I was also somewhat astonished about the price of the cover. What about borrowing one and getting a pattern made? £600 is more than taking the mickey.

I have to admit that its daylight robbery and I'm sure it would be too difficult to copy easily...... Still I hope the insurance will pay... Now that will be another interesting saga..... lets see.

Sounds like it would have to be a casting. What about posting a question on that subject?. Fair chance we have an engineer with the appropriate knowledge.

I know quite a lot of engineering companies but dont know one these days that does castings.

Good luck whatever you decide to do.

having lost 2 of these covers, I suggest that a diver may find cover. ie it was probably loose and if it did not fall off outside the marina you will probably find it under your boat.

Derf,
By gearbox cover do you mean the one held on with a single screw and covering the fwd/rev rocker arm and cable holder? Mine has gone also, but my boats in the water, I only noticed it in the clear water off East Head on the weekend.

£600 squid seems ridiculous for a small casting of which thousands have been made!! Good old VP!

Not sure how the cover would have fallen off, when the boat was stationary for two weeks. I raised the legs to try ad scrape off the barnacles, so I know it was intact in the marina.

Did you recover yours and if not were you able to source a cover for less than the ridiculous price I'm being charged?
