Due to collect new pride and joy in a couple of weeks. So busy attempting to source bits and pieces....any reccomendations from the cognoscenti of scuttlebut as to where one can get competetive quotes for 10 deck saloon Windows and 8 opening/ closed Ports?. As this will be the first experience of sailing with a lid on, any advice as to whether to go for D/Glazed units on the front of the D/saloon?
Many Thanks .Tony W.

<whether to go for D/Glazed units on the front of the D/saloon> presume you mean double glazing? on a boat the insulating properties would be no use to you, what you need is strength, especially in large front windows which will be hit by solid water from time to time, my large front windows are 12mm acrylic which may be a bit OTT but it makes me feel comfortable in heavy weather. one thick pane is stronger than 2 thin ones.

Branchsound Ltd (Technautic Marine Windows), Unit 9, Springfield Road Industrial Estate, Burnham-on-Crouch, Essex CM0 8TE, Tel: (01621) 782964

They supplied me with made-to-measure windows last year and were good to deal with. (Usual no-connection disclaimer).

use of glass - any opinions

i have a technautic window looking onto the cockpit, i agree they are good quality but i steered away from glass in the deck saloon windows in case they were shattered by swinging harness hooks etc.

anyone got practical experience of this?

Re: use of glass - any opinions

Thanks for the replies guy's...Reason for the ? on double glazed units (using heavy duty Laminated glass) was the experience of heavy misting reported by some Freinds of mine on a recent charter.......They found that they were having to wipe fairly frequently...despite hot air outlets (took a long time to warm up). 6mm Lam is pretty bulletproof. Glad to hear about Technautic, andrew, they were my first port of call...

Re: use of glass - any opinions

We have a large double glazed window at home on which the sealing has failed, causing it to mist up internally. On a boat window, which could be subjected to varying stresses, I would have thought that this would be quite a possibility. And there's no way by which the misting can be removed!
