Porpoises

We have seen harbour porpoises a couple of times in the Blackwater, seals all the time although sometimes they take a bit of spotting.

Here is the best bit of a video taken when a porpoise swam alongside for a while. Sadly took me far too long to grab the camera, and missed the closest passes.

We have seen them occasionally off the East Coast, most recently off the Naze in May. The best place to see them is in the Baltic, though - I recommend Egaa just north of Aarhus, where a group of 3 or 4 came and played around our boat. Usually, though, they seem to ignore boats, and you just hEar them breathe and then see them come up to breathe twice or so.

We seen one, we seen one!

We were trailed by a porpoise for a couple of minutes between Southwold and Orford Ness yesterday. Didn't manage to get a photo sadly

As for seals, was yacketing to Sailorman over our respective sterns last evening and a baby seal popped up a couple of times in the marina between us.
There are lot of mullet in there so I expect their population will be getting depleted each day.

Ever Eaten Grey Mullet?

There is an awful lot of grey mullet everywhere so doubt if it will be a problem!

ps As they are easy to catch, anybody - other than seals - ever eaten grey mullet?

Having seen where they hang out and what they generally eat, I wouldn't ;)
Although I know a few people that have and are still here to tell the tale. Apparently they taste a bit muddy.....I'd have thought they should taste of something else

Earlier this year we were shadowed by a porpoise on the tidal Trent from Keadby to West Stockwith. Can only assume the poor bugger had got lost and wanted to get out into open water again. People thought we were made when we told them :D

Been in Hamford water for a couple of days - rowed the tender up Oakley Creek this afternoon, absolutely stuffed with seals. Must have been 40 or 50 of them and very curious and friendly, had 7 within yards of me all having a good look at this poor man who obviusly cant afford an outboard. They seemed sympathetic! Mind you when one caught and ate an eel I did think of Gollum (I thought I heard a voice saying "Nice fissshhes"). Got to the explosives jetty - they were firing some off not far away to prove the place is still active, but somehow the actual quay didnt look like it receives 2 or 3 coasters a week as per the pilot books.

Saw one off the Naze yesterday between Stone Banks and Medusa buoys. Often see them going up and down the coast.
As for Dolphins once when crossing from Dover and Calais and once when near West Hinder light.

And then a single porpoise when coming down the Swin towards Blacktail Spit.
The odd seal gets into the muddy basin that is called Hoo Marina - they're after the mullet we reckon.
