Poole Quay - They\'re latest wheez

I tied up at the quay on Saturday to top up the water tanks from the water point down by Piplers and found it padlocked with a notice on the housing saying words to the effect -

"Wessex Water now insist we keep this water point locked and the filling process be supervised.
If you require water, contact the marina and a member of staff will come down to unlock and supervise.
Or you can tie up on the waiting pontoon at the marina and fill up there".

Of course, on contacting them, they had "no member of staff available".
It looks like they never will have, as it would appear that that part of the quay (that was available for up to 2 Hours waiting) has now been assigned to the Trip Boats. This appears to be a underhand way of forcing boats to use the Marina. Not that they were short of takers over Easter, the Marina was full and their was about 5 rafts of 3 or 4 deep along the quay, up near the marina, all paying marina prices!

I was rafted up on the quay last night as well. Price was cheaper than I've been led to believe the Marina is (33ft at £15 some pence including harbour dues at about a fiver). Cheaper than Lymington Yacht Haven the night before which was £22 + pence - the showers were good though.

Cracking sail back to the Hamble today. 31 miles (through the water) in four and a half hours including fighting the foul tide out of Poole harbour. That's my record by some margin.

I do not want to rub salt in empy wallets, but I went to France. Was charged less than £5/night, free electricity and showers for all, Hotel du Commerce was usual very high standard 4 courses, wine, coffee and Kir for less than £15. Had super sail past Barfleur in the sun and spinny run back. We were the only Easter visitors, where were the others?

I can beat that!!

Took a wrong turning last year in Dunkerque and finished up in Belgium.

The Harbour Master at Veurne explained he had to charge us a FULL THREE MONTHS when all we wanted to do was to sail to Nieuwpoort (three hours away) and lock out into the Channel.

Then discovered that three months equalled £16 for 8 metre boat!! This entitles you to two free nights at any Town Marina within Belgium (after two nights you have to move on to the next town or pay a mooring fee) - with access to water, metered electricity, showers, laundry, driers etc.

We locked out two days later and spent ONE NIGHT in Ramsgate at £17.50!!!!!!!

We will be back in Belgium next year!!

Best regards ))
