Poole Harbour Islands

Morning all..

Last year was our first season in Poole and we spent some time exploring the harbour and a little outside the harbour.. This year we were thinking about exploring some of the islands but I didn't know if there were any rules/laws/regulations that applied to some or all of the islands because as I understand they are privately owned.. I haven't been able to find much online relating to it either..

So what is the story with taking a tender to the islands?

You are right. Islands are privately owned and although you can land below the high water mark not a lot to do on a sea of mud and shingle. So. they are really a no no. You can however land on Brownsea, but have to pay the NT levy unless you are member and on the mainland at Arne/Shipstal Point and Goathorn.

I too used to think one could wander freely between high and low water marks. After a lot of Do Not Land notices appeared I phoned the harbor commissioners and was told it wasn't allowed.

Is there anywhere on the harbour perimeter that you are not allowed to land on?

Is there a fee to land on Arne/Shipstal Point or Goathorn (or any of the points for that matter)?

Those notices are (or have been) contested. PHC is following the party line, not wishing to offend the powerful owners. Bit of a moot point - as I suggested not really worth landing in the intertidal zone anyway.

No charges. It is not practical to land in many places because it is marshy and nowhere to go. Landing also possible on the south side of the Wareham Channel.

If you wanted to do that, where would you anchor or pick up a bouy?

The run up to Wareham can be very pleasant and relaxing - just needs a bit of careful planning around tides and depth...

No buoys but recognised anchorages in South Deep between Goathorn and Ower Bay and between Shipstal Point and Long Island. Clearly marked channels, but a bit on the shallow side and both areas are a bit like a Tesco parking lot on sunny weekends. For Brownsea, anchor on the west side off Pottery Pier. All well covered on charts and in guides. If you are not familiar with the harbour, then a grockle boat trip from the quay around the harbour is well worth it.
