But pontoon boats crossing the Atlantic are fairly tame compared to some craft that have crossed in the past (or tried to).

I remember in the 70's some folk sailed a boiler across to Barbados - they had added a keel, and a sort of conning tower, and she had a proper sailing rig.

Some other folk wanted to sail a VW Beetle across - I saw photos of it in the Canaries. They had filled the car interior with foam, also added a keel, and a basic rig, and had built a sort of flying bridge on the roof. Perhaps fortunately, we heard that the local Authorities would not allow them to leave from the Canaries.

And I remember two young French lads sailed a Hobie cat across from the Canaries to Martinique in fine style without fanfare in about 18 days.

And of course there is also Big C which will put any pontoon boat to shame - he is threatening to sail across the North Atlantic next year.

How about a kite for use as a sail, and a Jordan series drogue for use as an anchor? :D

You had mentioned "And there was Fred Carlin who crossed with his wife after the war in an amphibious Jeep called “half Safe” - I am sure they re-named the jeep 'Completely safe' when they arrived. :)

And then there was Colin Mudie, who crossed in a hot air balloon called 'Small World' - but they only got about halfway (or maybe a bit further) before they had to ditch and carry on under sail.
Four days up and twenty days down - The Small World crossing of the Atlantic December 1958
