My father always said "Politicians - the lowest form of life"

He was offered a safe Labour seat once - and refused it. so he practiced what he preached.

Now just imagine if the House of Commons caught up with the way public polls have been held for a lifetime, and there was secret balloting in the Lords and the Commons. What an efffect that would have.

Think about it.

I often feel this way too. However, the alternatives to a free society are few. Democracy has its price and politicians with dubious motives and poor abilities are some of that price. The empire of japan and the antics of hitler's reich are but two terrifying examples of a non democracy. I prefer our imperfect system, bad as it can sometimes be, to anything else.

Re: The crime many huntsmen will be charged with

is "Conspiracy". Well according to some Chief Constable on BBC it is.

Now, there is a conspiracy abroad in the land and it's called party politics. A group of suites conspire to mislead the population of the country, to shout "yah boo sucks" at anyone who opposes them and to jump on any band wagon to achieve their own ends. It happens quite often. I'm surprised that no ones noticed.

As to the checks and balances, the media & the House of Lords. Well ones got it's own agenda and the other is neutered. You can pick which one you think is which.

I've been "spoiling my paper" at elections for some years. In fact I've got quite a little group of "paper spoilers" that I know of. We just write none of these blokes on it. We don't kid ourselves it makes much difference but it does feel better than staying home or voting for someone thats just another strand of the same problem.

Thinking on it the last politician I met, and I've met quite a few really, that impressed me at all was Joe Grimmond. Of course I was only about 10 at the time so I could have been more impressionable than I am now.

Re: or how to take-over a country

Get a copy of the series on TV around 1990 called The House of Cards, watch and learn how to take over a country via the media. Tony did and it worked for him, watch the triology and form your own party and you to could be PM.

Re: or how to take-over a country

Hmm. House of Cards was written by Michael Dobbs, ex-adviser to Thatcher on election strategy and PR. It'll tell you quite a lot about how she and the Tories used PR and spin to come to power; rather less about Labour except that they learnt well from the experience of losing several elections, and from the techniques deployed against them.

Modern Politicians cultivate their image assiduously, but they only do so because the electorate are so shallow that they are taken in by that image, and don't stop to look at what is behind it. Robin Cook famously said that he would never become Prime Minister because of his looks, but he is both more intelligent and more principled than Tony Blair and might well have made a better PM.

Think on; it's no use blaming the politicians - we're the idiots that vote for them - but don't you think that spoiling your vote is the ultimate cop-out?

I shall arise now, and head for my nuclear bunker........../forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

(PS I agree with Peppermint: Jo Grimond was Chancellor of my University and a man of intelligence, wit and integrity. They don't make 'em like that any more).

<us voters must allow pikeys, illegals and criminals free range>

I'm sorry but haven't I heard this sort of attitude somewhere before... now let me think... it must have been about 1937 and just a few degrees east of here (UK).

Politicians might be lacking in many respects but this sort of thinking suggests something far more sinister. People get the politicians they deserve and ignorance and intolerance, sadly, appears to be rife in both courts.

The rest of my text did say that I believe that none of these groups would vote for anyone and yet they seem to get most of the laws passed in their favour.
A for instance, friend of mine owns small agro machinery business, he needs a special trailer to tote and deliver his machines on so he has special trailer made, it gets nicked, he then spots it (because it's pupose made for him) goes to the copshop and reports that he's found the trailer and it can be found outside of x address, copper says, claim on your insurance because for us to go try and get it back would require to much man power and to many broken heads.
Now if thats not one group being above the law I don't know what is?
Last year a road close to us was closed for 2 days because 2 sets of waring illegals decided to settle their differences with a knife fight in the street. It appears that none of them (15 was the number quoted)were working and that the local council had decided to put them up in a couple of large houses in a "nice" residential area.
At the back of my house there is a large verge running alongside the road, pikeys find it very inviting and use it on a regular basis, everytime they leave it takes the council 2 days to clear up all the crap left behind, last time it consisted of trees, concrete from driveways, propane gas bottles, white garden furniture, lawnmowers (why would a pikey want a lawnmower?)Tarmac, old sofit/fascia boards and the contents of various locals garden sheds etc.
I go back to my original rant, these people don't pay ANY taxes either local or national, they drive around in motors like BMW X5, Mercs and the latest Range Rovers, they don't vote, why should they after all thay have a good life, they don't pay tax, drive the best motors and generally leave their crap for someone else to pick up and pay to be removed. The fuz are s**t scared of them and only approach them if they out-number them! When they return to Ireland, most of them have homes/estates that you and I only see in country life mags.
As for insinuating that I have Nazi tendances then I take exception, all I ask is that they are treated the same as me i.e I pay tax and if I get nicked by a speed camara then I have to pay or go to jail, SO WHY NOT THEM?
