Can anyone recommend a reputable agency?
Gracias.

Confused ...

You are Canadian
Boat is in Spain
Registry is Polish

So what registry do you want to change it to ?
I read it to mean the boat is in Spain and under a Spanish flag registration, and wants to change to Polish flag. The reason could be to get away from the Spanish regulations, but whatever reason, it will have to be removed from Spanish registration first, also there will be 'tax' that he will have to pay on purchase

Yes, thank you — those are the facts. I was not aware of a purchase tax on the buyer — will have to add that to my list of things to manage. With so many online sites for Polish registration, hard to determine who I can rely on.

The sale of cars and boats etc in Spain are subject to a tax which is payable by the purchaser...I believe its a % of the purchase price.

The registration is not a problem - the boat can be registered in Canada, if you meet the criteria. Ours is.

For a Polish registry you must have an EU address.

The problem you will encounter is that no Canadian company will insure your boat in Europe, at least not at a price one could possibly afford.

The only way to get European insurance is to have an European address. This must be shown on the vessel's registry. Fortunately, you can have a Non-Canadian address on a Canadian registry. Without insurance you basically can't operate the boat, keep her in a marina or visit one for that matter.

Don't ask me how I know.

For keeping the boat in the EU you must demonstrate that VAT has been paid or is deemed paid. We had the opportunity to jump through a few burning hoops to satisfy the local customs.

I'm tagging on the end of this post I found with a more general question about Polish registrations.
Is the reason there seems to be a lot of Polish registered boats in Spain related to this tax thing? Or are people from other Eastern (non-EU) countries registering there?
I heard a lot of Eastern languages being spoken in Empuriabrava but I don't think they were Polish ( I've worked there and, while I can speak very little, I recognise it). There is also a boat for sale in Sitges which I am interested in which is Polish flagged but, when I called the number, I got a voice mail for someone with the name Dimitri which is mostly a Russian name.

If you are keeping your resident status in the UK then you can register your boat on the UK register.

The reasons for many using the Polish register are firstly because other registers can be restrictive in terms of eligibility and many (like Spain and Portugal) have both restrictions on usage of boats depending on type of boat and qualifications and high costs related to compulsory equipment plus regular inspections. Before Brexit many used the UK SSR to avoid local registration, but that avenue is no longer open (the UK residence requirement is more strictly enforced). Poland oes not at the moment have many restrictions and is easy to get, hence its popularity.

Oh, yeah, I know I will have to UK register for insurance anyway.
I was just curious why it was so popular and if, maybe, there was dodgy dealing or money laundering going on.

I have a friend in South African boat that is Polish Registered as well as South African listed (Not Registration but a local listing)

One advantage of Polish Regi station is that it does not expire unlike UK or most other Registrations that need to be renewed every 5 years
