We weere boarded at anchor, I think off Dale(?sp) waiting for the Milford Haven lock. Routine - I was sleeping and didn't even hear them!

Apparently they were professional, polite and just took a copy of the crew list and left.

As far as we're aware it was random. Probably mostly because we were the only clowns out there in the perishing cold

Occasionally the MOD Plod stop at our pontoon across the way from Wicor in Portsmouth, was a bit stressful at 2am the first time it happened, have also had some quite suspicious looks when accessing Fleetlands after dark. Good to know they are on the case.

Came alongside and requested permission to come aboard. One officer boarded and was a bit inquisitive for a minute or two until he relaxed and had a normal chat for 10 minutes. Wanted to know where the boat came from and all our names - 3 on board - before zooming off again. No drama at all really

Just a record I assume as there was no radio communication. May I ask why you're so interested?

Friend of mine said they were on patrol in our local harbor, checking passports/ID. I'd never heard of this before, I thought that was just a job for Border Force, so decided to ask what other experiences were

At one time our beating of the bounds cruise each year involved most of the local motorboat/speedboat and sailng clubs, the lifeboat from Sheerness, the port authourities launch and usually one of the local harbour tugs from Switzer at Sheerness.
Plus invited dignitaries from local councils and Rochester Cathedral.
The police rib was always previously in attendance . It failed to be available a year or two ago.......................................No money.

Had a visit from the Border Patrol a couple of years back. Al very friendly, just making contact and asked us to keep an eye open for anything we thought suspicious.

I had exactly the same. Big black rib three persons onboard. No weapons and very friendly saying the same thing. The strange thing about it all was that I had just picked up a mooring between Instow and Appledore in the Torridge estuary. I'm not sure where any illegal immigrants would come from to head into north Devon.

We too often noticed the MOD Plod arriving and patrolling up and down through Wicor in our years there. My only gripe was that the noise of their engines always woke me up, even when they were on little more than tickover. Mind you, their very presence means that there is/was considerably less crime around that part of the harbour.

Same here, which is why I took the chance to see how close I could get. My assumption was that they probably wouldn't kill me.

You are probably right. The form filling in would be horrendous & the Daily mail would have a field day.
Your wife could do all right out of it, if she had a good lawyer, though
But make sure that you have not put your name in the visitors book at the local mosque, otherwise she will get zilch & family will have to go into hiding.
