If I ever manage to buy a first boat I would love to have kept it at Fowey. However they only have a very long waiting list for deep water moorings and I am thinking I am going to need shore power in order to use a heater etc to stop any damp, plus I quite like the idea of the social side of a marina.Secondly I imagine you may feel the need to always 'go somewere ' if you are up river on a mooring so there maybe some possible savings on fuel with a berth. What I don't understand is the arrangement in marinas where you can just be in the water over the summer.I like the idea of it being cheaper, but do you have to arrange somewhere to have it taken out of the water and stored during winter ? I would appreciate any suggestions of places near Plymouth where you can have a boat on the hard and any indication of cost for a 40ft boat. Also any comments and preferences about any of the three main marinas in Plymouth would be great-thanks

Hi Tim
Many marinas will include a spell ashore in the annual contract but you will probably have to pay for crainage etc
You could stay on the hard for as long as you like but again will probably have to pay for storage that will be nearly as much as keeping her in the water.
I see you are a fair distance from the sea but if you get the chance to visit a coastal marina call in for a chat, or make a few calls.
Most marinas, in my experience are quite friendly and helpful. Especially if you are going to be paying them maybe around £5k PA
Good luck

There's 4 if not five marinas in Plymouth, YachtHaven, QAB, Sutton Harbour and Mayflower, plus the new marina by the ferry terminal and another at Royal William Yard. IMHO Sutton is the best placed for shoreside entertainment, has the best facilities and is the most sheltered. However, if you want to be lifted out, you'll need to look to one of the others.

I bought Ocean Belle whilst moored at Mayflower. I found the Marina a most aimiable place, and would definitely compare its staff and services on a par with any of the Solent Marinas. Bear in mind Marinas only exisit for the Summer Sailing season, so you won't save much on a Summer only mooring arrangement and will still need to find a Winter home.
