Maybe when you have lost power or control, and making it to the nearest airfield is no longer an option.

I seem to recall that some years ago there was a plane came down in the Solent on top of a yacht, with fatal consequences. Glad this one had a better outcome.

Cirrus SR22 has a built in parachute, Lord Sugar has one.

If its their own CAPS system then you should deploy it after the engine is cut.

Having flown aircraft with these ballistic recovery systems fitted, my plan was only to use it if a successful forced landing seemed too difficult due to e.g. the terrain, a structural failure etc. Nice to have the option but I am glad I have never had to use it.
