THis is not something I would ever consider doing but why let that stop me fulminating?
It would be more a process of elimination. All Western Med coasts are out from the French border to the Croatian border on the grounds of cost. Spain is possible but it's all so developed and you would probably be forced into a big, impersonal marina.
I'm not sure about Croatia - it's beautiful and cheap but could I live there?
Turkey might do but given the current political situation I think I would wait a few years.
So how about a small Greek island off the beaten track but close enough to civilisation should the need arise. I have just read a book called Gates of the WInd by Michael Carroll. He settled on Skopelos in the Sporades after cruising Greek waters for some time. Although he writes of a much earlier age (1960s?) before tourism took off in the area, we cruised there recently and some of the smaller islands still had the charm he describes so well. I would avoid Skopelos now but one of the other islands could do nicely.
Thanks for your fulmination, James. Island life is appealing for a short time, but I'm pretty sure we couldn't live on one permanently for reasons of isolation, health care, shopping etc. We live on one now and get frustrated when the bridge over the ICW opens just as we approach it!
Thanks, Peter.
I was just curious as to where people would choose to live/boat if they could. It was years since I was at Aigues Mortes, by road, but the whole Languedoc area is very pleasant./AW
hi
i think aigues mortes has the following attractions -
low cost moorings
on the rhone à sete canal
close sea access via grau de roi
most boat facilities nearby
quiet out of season
walled city with all year restaurants
close to civilisation via nimes, montpellier, marseille airports
paris tgv is under 3 hrs
Billskip - the more I read on these BBs about crowds, rip-offs, poor service, bad weather, sail vs power gripes, the more I realise how lucky I am. Not much relaxing this weekend, though: Saturday 20 mile tandem ride with wife and Sunday 70 mile solo bike ride. Hope it's not as hot as today was.
Boating the following weekend: cruise to Useppa Island with friends, for my birthday. Don't all shout happy birthday at once, I couldn't bear it
