Brunsbuttel - excellent place for a good kip if you're knackered before/after the Kiel Canal, but truly horrible sanitary facilities and the locale has probably never ever appeared on a tourist itinerary..
I have to admit that we tended to avoid Brunsbuttel, preferring to hop from Cuxhaven to Rendsberg, but I have a kind of fond memory of the times we ended up there. Sometimes we were able to grab a bows-to mooring at the end and avoid being rafted, but generally there is a good community atmosphere among the boats, who often need to assist each other in the confined space. I did hear that it was going to be developed, but I haven't been that way for maybe eight years. The facilities were certainly quaint and of a municipal nature but after a couple of days at sea getting there from home I was always grateful for anything, though a crew member was a bit put out by the need to share a shower cubicle.

I have to say that I find it odd that an accomplished sailor, like yourself, would complain about a berth like that. I have been in several marinas with some angled berths. Willemstad & Boulogne spring to mind. There is enough room to park & from the picture it is difficult to see any problem with the length of the pontoon. Your bow is right into the angle with the stern stuck out so it makes it look tighter than it might actually have been. We cannot see the wall that you talk about, but 40 ft sounds acceptable to give one room to turn a 32 ft boat. The fact that someone had left some warps over the cleats is quite common in marinas & usually solved very easily.
Of course we have all met awkward HMs & that can be a different matter when one arrives tired & just needing rest rather than hassle. Been there, done it, had the T shirt  :(
I was just impressed that there was a member of staff around to help him at 3 am.

Some on here are amazingly well travelled
I have found -more or less- that perceived sh1tt holes are often worth visiting and have some great people / memories
When I first sailed into Olhao I thought how the heck am I going to get a job here .? ( there’s a joke about this door+that door-,long since dispelled ) But I did and 6 months later sailed on in fine fettle and sounder vessel
San Juan Puerto Rico : everyone sails the beautiful south PR coast, are you mad? It was awash in culture, characters, boaties as well as the bad stuff.
Nearer home Torquay gets a bad rap but I liked it ?
Whereas Yarmouth iow I will never ever revisit- noisy crowded and money gouging ?
