Does anyone still use Pitot tube speed units ?

For those who never seen one ... its a small tube that sticks down at transom and has a hole in the front ... making it a scoop ... water pressure then causes pressure in the small bore connecting tube back to pressure based display .... used to be popular as the tube is pivoted so less likely damaged ... was not sticking out of underhull like other transducers.

I think they're still in use in various outboard/out drive boats, certainly my current boat (new in 2021) with mercury 300hp outboard uses a pitot tube for measuring speed, its part of the outboard itself as opposed to a standalone device, the leg has a small hole in it which is the pitot tube - The boat also has a GPS so you can also use that as the speed source if you want.

My previous boat ( a 2007 windy 25) had a paddle wheel , but the previous boat to that (a 2006 sea ray) used a pitot tube that was part of the outdrive

My boat (inboard with an outdrive) came with pitot tube as a factory fit, it works but not all the time, but left it fitted to the boat. I use instead a GPS/Chartplotter and the a seperate speed paddle wheel.

Yes. Almost all jet airlines use them.

This plane crashed because they got blocked.

Had a look for the one I have yesterday, it's been moved so further investigation needed.

This morning I have to go get a set of davits off of a boat and get them ready to put on Hunter

No worries .... I have 4 months of winter to go ... and I wouldn't be out fitting it in the cold after having suffered 'frozen facial nerves' and causing me to be in hospital ....

Much appreciated.
