Last week we moored on the bag at Salcombe, a few boats also on the same pontoon, oh dear thought we no electricity here and boats bit too close to run our portable generator. Anyway we think ok will run it early evening right next to our boat, and if we get complaints turn it off. Its turned very foggy outside.

The crew of one boat go visiting another further away, and the other goes off in their dinghy we assume for some time. Gets to 8pm, we both don’t fancy whats on TV, so we switch it off, & switch on channel 16.

We hear the Brixham coast guard say “well Pirrrrrannha suggest you do have the lifeboat out” Now she’s a lady coastguard with a south coast accent so her rrr’s roll on and on.
So there follows lots of Pirrrraaannnha Pirrrrrrrannnha’s then secret conversations between them, he hasn’t any charts, and we assume has got lost in the fog. Then we hear the Salcombe lifeboat rocket go off, minutes later the lifeboat talking to the costguard, lots more Pirrrraannha pirrrrraannnha’s with the lifeboat’s engine noise now in the background. They can’t find him, suggests he lights a flare, no flares, suggest the lifeboat lights a flare. Eventually after ages & ages, they find him but Pirana says he dont want rescueing, he just wants showing the way back to Salcolmbe!! Then there’s talk of returning him to the Normandy Pier (now that’s one way of getting on that for the night) & next day he is to be given a safety lesson. Well we thought that was an entertaining evening thank you piranha.

Next day, the harbour master confirms yes he was brought in to the Normandy pier, we slightly thought of going and having a look at him. We set off the in opposite direction and up to Kings Bridge, who should pass us but Piranha, after a bit of this way, maybe that way, on the wrong side, I nudge hlb, ITS HIM point, and start taking photo’s, dam camera won’t work. That’s a shame. We go on to Kings Bridge but tide is too low to stop so turn round, and at exactly the same spot, passing us again on the wrong side, its piranha. Now he saw me nudging pointing & taking photo’s, result as you can see is he leaps in his cabin, he thought out of view… haha got him.

Oh, thats from Debs, mostly!!

Aren’t conversations heard on VHF subject to constraint of divulgence, I wouldn’t be happy to have my conversation repeated on the web and a picture posted, is it me?

I know what you mean, the thing is I have a choice, and my point about Secrecy of correspondence is serious, isn't anybody divulging communication subject to the following; quote from the Ofcom Web site “An unlicensed user of radio, or someone who contravenes the terms of their license could expect a fine of up to £5,000 or a custodial sentence of up to six months and forfeiture of their radio equipment through a magistrate's court. However they can request trial through the Crown Court where the fine is unlimited and the custodial sentence can be up to two years, again with forfeiture of the equipment involved.”

I am raising this point more out of interest than any intended criticism.

Regards

That set me thinking. Is it only the tougher characters with balls like those of jockeys that post on here? You're probably right in that.

Autopilot, himself, is quite right of course in what he says. I was intrigued as I thought it was possibly Mucky Farter being lost in the fog!!! Oh! I'm disappointed!!! (Only joking, Haydn!!!)

Haydn.

You are a very naughty boy give us your wrist.
Now - slap – next time – slap – you hear a mayday - slap – keep it to yourself. – slap-slap.

quote from autopilot.

Well here`s something that will interest you, if that law was implemented half the boat owners on the south coast would be behind bars, so stop being infantile and give credit where credit`s due.

Great story Haydn

It's great to read 'there but the grace of god' stuff, and i'm sure i enjoy it as much as you.

But there is a need to respect what you hear on the vhf for one simple reason. would you want someone not to put out a call for fear of ridicule, and then to get into further difficulties? i think this is a good reason to keep vhf private.

Haydn, you shouldn't have published this or the pic IMHO

Tome.

You mean to tell me that a frightened man lost in a fogbank isn`t going to call for help for fear of ridicule. I think you`re out on a limb there.
But giving you the benefit of the doubt, if he is that paranoid he could always use his mobile phone.

What do you think?

To be honest, I've a specific incident in mind. Me and the missus were coming up Southampton water when Oriana was outbound.

We responded to a call from solent CG about a small mobo with 3 crew on board and had lost their engine. Oriana had come close enough to challenge their wits.

We went over and towed them out of the channel. The bloke onboard with the h/h vhf told me he didn't have a licence and would he be done? No way, I said, you did the right thing. But he was terrified of breaking radio silence and had only done it at the last minute whereas if he'd called early he wouldn't have the laundry bill.

If his agony was posted on the web I'm quite sure that he wouldn't have the balls to ask for help next time, and we wouldn't have had the pleasure of pulling him clear and continuing on our way.

Well he should have been posted on the web, he`s a licence dodger and if you never reported him you`r an accomplice.

Now hold your wrist out

Herumph.. Well if you noticed. I never did post this thread, only an observer did, but I had no power on what was written, or who said what. It is just my confuser, thats all!

I am sure I've put out more rediculas calls to Coast guards than most. Every one of them recounted here. Less they've got lost like the exploding bog, but hardly my fault.

But it was not me that published, only under my name. In any account we are only saying that going to sea with no charts or anything else much, is a bit fool hardy. Dont disrespect the guy for getting stuck in sudden pea soup in a little boat. But this guy did not understand the rudiments of going to sea or even making a passage inland. So got in trouble. And got his hand slapped by life boat crew.

Errm is it a probem thesed days to say, go to sea with charts and maybe other stuff or maybe too PC??

Didn’t mean to sound like any kind of arm chair critic so my apologies, however my comments seem to have got some people thinking, in this day and age with the new fad of “blogging” privacy is rapidly becoming a thing of the past, I totally except that if I post on here the entire world can access what I have to say, but to some extent my privacy is protected.

I heard four separate May Days out fishing on Sunday, I must admit that a couple of them where amusing but I bet I wouldn’t have felt amused in their position, wasn’t it Woody Allen who said, “you cut your finger and it’s a tragedy, you see someone fall down a manhole and that’s hilarious”

Interesting to know it was some else using your equipment

Eh?

Cant see that your quoted statement has anything to do without. Anything broadcast on the ether is in the public domain just like any radio or TV broadcast
If hlb's post embarasses this tosspot sufficiently to get his arse down to a chandler to buy a chart or even a radar then thats doing us all a service
Actually from the look of his boat, I would'nt mind betting that he does a bit of plying for commercial fishing trips on the side, so he definitely should be exposed

Re: Eh?

For what it's worth i feel that Hadyn is correct to post his interpretation of events, as we know, not all users of this forum are that experienced and if they can learn from this experience and this guy's misfortune, and we can be entertained as well, It's a win win situation, should the skipper of Piranha also find out about this post, it may embarrass him enough to seek further training.
