Pipedream's progress in the Jester Challenge

Re: Pipedream\'s progress in the Jester Challenge

Not sure I did it right, but I did when I checked the forecast for me tomorrow, if so he's heading into some rough stuff.
Ran the Ugrib animation for that area out to the Azores and it seems to show 25 to 30 knot winds over the North Western coast of Spain for the next few days. Then easing off and very little in the way of helpful stuff until the end of the week unless he heads further out back to the North West.
As I say, I only think I did it right. Best of luck Alan mate.

Alan's 4th report below - obviously not as "plain sailing" as the outward trip. Expecting to talk to him later today, will post update when I have it - Gary

Re: Pipedream\'s progress in the Jester Challenge

Gary - did you see my report above of the conversation I had with Alan yesterday evening. With a bit of luck the winds will back on Monday/Tuesday ("Back" means go anticlockwise so they become more northerly). This may help him get up the coast a bit. The attraction of La Corunna is that Easyjet fly from there! As you say, it is not going swimmingly - he used the word "grim" - head-on winds F4-6 non-stop.

Re: Pipedream\'s progress in the Jester Challenge

Hi Roger - yes I did thanks, just spoken to Alan & yes "grim's" the word.
He basically said he's aiming for Lisbon (ETA 15.00 24th), hanging approx 10 miles off coast & heading North, depending on time I've given him a few options for flying back (from Porto (Ryanair), Vigo, Santiago (Ryanair), La Caruna & Asturias (Easyjet)). Can't find Easyjet flights from La Caruna though (Iberia & Air Portugal I have from there). I'll check it out again. He also requested flight options from Brest in case things turn in his favour - ever the optimist eh?
Thanks - Gary

Re: Pipedream\'s progress in the Jester Challenge

Rough stuff indeed Just got this email from Paul on Stingray:

Hello Graham,

Hope all is well at your end. I understand Bill Kippen (edit Edith Kate, Arpege) made it back OK.

Thought I´d drop you a quick line to let you know how I´m getting on;

Left Santa Maria in the Azores on the evening of the 6th July. Been watchin g lows track up to the UK all month, so chose the direct route rather than no rth then east to use the Azores High.

Got it wrong! light headwinds all the way. I got as far north as La Coruna and decided to pop in for a rest. Encountered F6/7 gusting 8 from NE. I think t his is the resident squall off Finistere. Couldn´t go against it owing to big braking waves. 5hit scared.

I was about 60 miles from land and trying to go east to get inshore when bi g white [--word removed--hint - illegitimate] stove in port fwd window. Wave impact knocked shelves and furniture off the side of the boat. Wading around in water, tins and sultan as.
Ran with it towing a milk crate, occasionally buried by breaking waves. Soa king wet but not too cold. Ships offered to take me off, if it had been cold I w ould probably have accepted. Occasionally able to make 150 degrees but mostly dr iven south. Got blown down into Portugal. Eased after a few days and could make 120 degrees currently at Viana Do Castelo (Most northern Portugese port in Reed s).

Repairs completed (fancy wooden windows on the front), boat now dry etc, sh elves etc P40´d back on to the walls. Departing tonight. Lots of little nooks a nd crannys to anchor up near Finisterre (they tell me its lovely). There are l ight SE winds forecast in a couple of days. Should hold for crossing Biscay.

Still hoping to make Ostende hope to see you there!

Thanks for the link Gary. Alan - remember I'm watching and believe I have certain bullying rights so don't do anything foolhardy, or you'll be in big trouble with me! Please .... be careful. x (This is Dawn, by the way!!)
