Get the stern secured first, you can always keep the bows under control with the bow thruster.
I suggested that much earlier but he didn't fancy the idea.Get the stern secured first, you can always keep the bows under control with the bow thruster.
The method I was taught (see post #11) definitely does work because I have done it .The tide is always in line with the piles, so that's not a problem. A cross wind of any magnitude will make any single handed mooring here impossible, I think. At least, I haven't thought of any way to deal with that.
The advantage of a static line is that you could stabilise the boat from the middle, rather than from the bow.
Thank you! Will study. The method I was taught (see post #11) definitely does work because I have done it .
David Harding also describes it in his PBO article dated November 9, 2023. How to pick up a pile mooring - Practical Boat Owner
Before discounting it I would, if I were you, try it a few times but with a crewman.
If you find it works for you the next step would be to try and work out a way of doing it single-handed.
I never had occasion to do that but I don't see why, with a heavy displacement boat like yours that will stay put for a few moments, it shouldn't be possible.
