So looking for next boat and going to the 45-50ft range. Needs to be under 5 years old for finance company reasons. Anyone know when the Phantom 48 stopped being made? I see there's one for sale that's a 2010 build. Plus are they any good?!

I've been on a few and a colleague here in the office had one till he recently traded for squadron 50. I think they stopped around 2011. Nice boat. Modern feel to saloon - quite a contemporary look. 3rd cabin is only bunks. Full beam master is nice, and has big windows - it has headroom intrusions in a few places but so do plenty of mid cabins on this sized boat of mid-noughties design, before higher freeboards become more prevalent in later designs. I never loved the washing machine in master cabin but that's not a big deal. D9 engines on shafts and Onan 1500rpm proper genset, so all ok there. Tender launch is via passerelle, which is very good in my books. Most had the nice electric lift up TV in master cabin but the 2010 in Southampton doesn't annoyingly. Strongest feature is the nice design of the saloon and it looks good in either the oak or the cherry, imho. They seem to have taken a chunk of depreciation and look v good value generally now. Should be plenty around because a big number were made. Good luck

Thanks for all that info jfm, much obliged. I saw a video showing the washing machine in the master cabin, obvious place for it really!!

From experience I can tell you that the washing machine won't come out of the master cabin when it goes wrong!

There's always a way - I helped flat-pack a tumble dryer though a narrow door into A&K's Squad 58 utility room. (It look a while, there was blood, and there were a couple of screws left over, but it's still working...) :D

Ha! "Won't" is for wusses :D. As Jimmy said, you just flatpack the thing. I've done a few. On my Sq78 I deleted the white goods removal soft patch in the aft deck from the standard build, because I prefer to disassemble them rather than live with a soft patch. Obviously it makes sense to buy the most expensive Miele you can find, for long life

Phantom 48 is a nice boat but every cabin is a compromise, the bunk cabin is for kids only, the fore cabin has very limited floor space to dress in, the main cabin is ok. The galley is tiny and some of the crockery draws are on a different level. The saloon, cockpit and fly are ok. Engine room is great for servicing. Personally I'd buy a Princess 50 if I was going into that size bracket.

Sure Paul agreed but princess 50 is a step up as in 19 vs 15.6 tonnes and 2x 700hp vs 2x575 and of course a cost step up too. So it should be better. Still has bunks in 3rd cabin I thought, though happy to be corrected on that

I am sure that P50 is bunks in third cabin. The big accommodation difference between the P50 and the Phantom 48 is that the P50 has a separate dinette, which the Phantom does not. (There are compromises to achieve this, of course, like lots of steps and the galley right outside the master cabin, but to get so many accommodation spaces into a 50 footer is good going by Princess).

These pics are from the 2nd and 3rd cabin of a Mk II Princess 50, so yes, bunk beds in third cabin, at least in a boat of that era.

Just the man I need to talk to then! Any advice on how to get fridge/freezers out of galleys? When building my boat, Ferretti seemed to have started with the fridge and built the boat around it:eek:

Surely getting them _out_ is easy, no? I'll pop round with my chainsaw, if that helps? :D

PS I'm off to Eicma tomorrow ... are you NECing it this year?

Nope, it looks like somebody is going to have to dismantle the galley and I'm running out of Italians to ask to do that so I may well ask you to pop over to Cagliari with your chainsaw and sledge hammer:)
I was going to contact you about the NEC. We're thinking about going on Fri 28 Nov. Want to join us?

What about a Sealine T50 - much more space downstairs than the Phantom 48, has the currently fashionable upstairs galley, the flybridge space is a lot bigger, you can extend the cockpit which makes it a really big space. The crew cabin isn't large (who has crew on a 50 footer?) but there is loads of storage in the engine bay. It has the same engines and electronics as the P48 with a more fuel efficient hull, 0.75mpg at 24Knots (really). Engine access is pretty good for servicing. And most importantly the washer/dryer machine is in the downstairs hallway and can be removed quite easily.

Ah can't sorry, I'm in Denmark and then the US that week. I haven't done very well with dates with you lot this year, have I? Sorry.

Pencil in June next year then if you're interested. We're thinking about Ireland or Scotland again for a 5 day tour
