Petter mini twin

A friend of mine has a 12 hp Petter mini twin that requires a new starter motor.
Does anyone know of an alternative part, ie. from a car, that will fit. At £450 for replacement he is keen to find an alternative.

Has he tried a alternator/starter motor repair shop? My experience is that they can often effect a repair considerable cheaper than buying new, or they may be able to source a replacement at a reasonable price
