Ted, The handbook specifies engine oil, as did Pat Manley in his piece on the engines (PBO No368 Aug 97).
I have heard of other gearboxes with alternative fluids but can't say why, we really need an engine expert to tell us.
Suggest you look at the dipstick (hex nut on top of box) if it looks like oily oil, there you go. Brian
The lube in most marine gearboxes has to deal with the clutches that engage when you select F or R... Our Vetus has a Tehcnodrive attached, the Techno handbook says ATF, the Vetus manual says engine oil... I go with the manufacturer. It ,akes sense to have a lube designed for working in friction environments for me, but make sure you get a definitive answer on what the maker reckoned
