Yea, yea, yea, LJS. There are hundreds of thousands of petrol powered boats over here and they don't blow up every day. Most boat fires are caused by electrical faults and diesel burns very well when ignited in that way.

And it is smelly, noisy and pushes out clouds of black smoke to pollute our atmosphere etc. etc.
By the way has no boat run on diesel ever exploded or caught fire?

I guess this view of the US market could be confused by their different switchover point from outboard to inboard, you see plenty of 25-30ft boats in Florida running multiple o/b rather than a sterndrive, making petrol vapour in bilges less of a problem. Of course those too big for o/b's go to petrol sterndrive rather than diesel I guess.

I would think any bilge pump float switch (and indeed the pump itself), that is necessarily waterproof is also going to contain any sparks isn't it? Any mercury-vial style switches are certainly going to be....

Has anyone seen any more on this incident, maybe they were brewing up a kettle on the gas ring while correctly waiting for the bilges to clear....? Bit presumptious to assume that any onboard fire/explosion is caused by petrol in the bilge.

Hi Simon, welcome to the forum

You are going to confuse us as we already have an "Its Only Money" on here (Ian on Windermere) It would probably be a good idea to change, we are an ageing lot on here and it would get too complicated and we would need to call for the nurse.

If Ian answered your post it would look like you were talking to yourself - which come to think of would mean you would fit in well :)

How many of you diesel engined boat owners carry a can of unleaded for the dinghy outboard?

All of you with small outboard powered tenders!!! I presume.

Just as leathal if not stored in a vented locker!
Almost all petrol engine boats have bilge blowers to evacuate vapours from bilges the exception being outboard powered boats, not many diesel boats have, if any.

Therefore be carefull where you store your jerry cans.
I know there are less ignition possibilities but the risk is just as great.

I would say petrol boat owners are far more aware & probably take greater precautions with petrol than most diesel boat owners.

There are as many fire risks on a diesel boat as on a petrol boat.
Just more risk of explosion with petrol.

We all need to be sensible with petrol, not just petrol powered boat owners.
