Re: Having done long trips

with large crews on boats with minimal facilities it shows that the most debonaire shorebased executive soon reverts to UG the caveman at sea. Arriving places with senior managers of Plc's, entering bars and watching the locals move well away from the intrusive pong is quite amusing. After about three days these crews develop their own total exclusion zone.

The opposite side of the coin comes when the buggers find a shower. When they get back on board the multiplication of ungents they've "splashed on all over" makes a trip below an eyewatering experience.

In the heat, when facilities aren't available, half a bowl of warm water for an evening sponge down in the cockpit does the job for me.

Re: Don\'t believe you

As an aged Pom I am delighted to point out to the Australians that showers were invented here.

My parents and us kids lived in a Victorian house with one bathroom and two shower rooms. The showers were used daily just as the shower is on my boat.

With 200 galls of fresh water and a restricted flow there is enough water for all 4 crew to shower daily for a week (not together I hasten to add). In harbour we use the shoreside facilities.

Re: Don\'t believe you

Brian - my old funnel web - the Victorians invented plumbing as we know it. The Victorians were so named because of their Queen - Victoria - Queen of England, Scotland Wales and a tiny bit of Ireland. Her predecessors also invented a novel form of punishment which was to post miscreants off to far flung corners of the globe. Australia was one of the favourite destinations where the shackle draggers were packed off to. Now it may be sunny over there and Dear Heart who lived at Surfers Paradise for a while tells me that it is quite warm, but she also mentioned that it doesn't rain a lot. Over here it rains plenty - we have showers of the stuff most days - so how come you think you're the ones doing all the showering?

Re: Hmmm....showering extremities

Fatty Cooper - a dear but fat friend - once tried to shower his extremities at the Sailing Club up by Sketrick Island in the converted lightship. They have a narrow door there and try as he might, he couldn't get in. He performed a mean hokey cokey to get most of the job done, then resorted to exporting the water from the shower and flicking it onto himself in order to do the Cooper Willie and Bot.

Re: Don\'t believe you

I'll have you know that she was also Queen of New Zealand - a considerable honour for her.

Also, this might be a silly question by the lack of bathing that seems to go on at or by the sea over there, what do you folks use as soap when bathing with sea water?

Not a trivial question for us as once we leave harbour, the next land based shower and treated fresh water is about 45 miles away, and the next after that about 120 miles (and the pubs are no closer).

Re: Don\'t believe you

Claymore Towers has always been the place to find alternative therapies, remedies and soaps. It is true to say that we are strangers to Fairy or Cussons products - indeed the mighty arm of Unilever has failed to connect with C.Towers. We have for decades now been consumers of Chochoba, Hello Vera, Cranberry and Champ and Rosebaywillowwort. I don't quite know what we use to wash in but it's green and looks very eco-friendly and has the abrasive qualities of coarse pumice - indeed it works on hard skin on the soles of feet, elbows and brightwork with equal pugnacity. It doesn't smell very scented and the highland midgies are not keen on it.
Hope this helps.

Re: RNMDSF???

Royal National Mission for Deep Sea Fishermen.

While in Mallaig this summer went to the RNMDSF for something to eat. The place was mobbed, especially the Cafe.

Listening to a local give advice to a tooorist on where to eat, he advised that they should come back to the RNMDSF in the evening and have fish and chips. Reason was that you could go to a fancy restaurant and be charged £15 or come here and eat exactly the same fish for £3.50

OK I over did it with the "fancy restaurant" bit in Mallaig but you get my drift.
