Personal Hygiene when cruising

I have found that two 'discoveries' made over the years have helped enormously in this department:

Moist Toilet Tissues and/or anti-bacterial wipes are extremely useful when a shower is, for whatever reason, not possible.

Dove Shower Cream lathers in salt water. Admittedly this is of more use in the Med than in the North Sea, but when cruising in warmer waters it is a godsend.

Do the stand-up wash routine if its not too cold. Salt water first and rinse with fresh. Fair clears the fumes from the head.

Teethbrushing is a necessity of life, esp. after a good night on the cratur. Shaving is kept for a stop with showers. The big prob. is hairwashing. After three days without a shower I had to go into Tarbert and get a no. 3 clipper job. Couldn't get a comb through it.

Gut mein herr..

It is sufficient sometimes to be clean from within.

Good clean thoughts will keep your bowels and your bilges clean. Furthermore, when oggling that female crew on the next boat you must be strong and resist! - she may not have access to proper cleansing facilities and you don't want to attract any applause* do you?

Re: Depends on....

on the subject of smelly peeps on the train....can I make a plea for all men who don't wear antiperspirant to do so, unfortunately being of about male armpit height I spend all summer on the tube wishing I could wear a gas mask without getting arrested as a terrorist suspect.

Coming from the old boy scout brigade, we were taught how to get a all over wash including hair, brush yer teeth from 1 cup of water and still have enough left over for a cupper, no smelly meat and two veg here, sorry cant function unless I get a good wash in the nether regions, even on training vessel.

Wishbone smelling like roses!
Anyway my mum says wash yer bits and pieces and put on clean pants, in case you get knocked down by a bus, could never understand this quote! If I got knocked down by a bloody big bus, methinks I would have skid marks and wet pants, no worries!

Re: Smelly Wishbone Roses

I've never heard of a boat getting knocked down by a bus.. and I'm not sure I'd want to make a cuppa outa the water I'd washed in../forums/images/icons/laugh.gif

Re: Smelly Wishbone Roses

I’ve heard that if you live in the London area, your probably dinking the water you flushed down the loo ½ hour previously, One thought though is that why there seem to be more Nancy boys down there, all them female hormone type stuff being flushed away. Keep drinking the bottled water. Glad I moved the north; mind you the Humber looks a nice shade of brown.

Re: Absolutely! The Smelly

There are small boat pontoons in Lochinver, and showers a stone's throw away in the RNMDSF. Obviously a softy's destination. Or maybe it's because by the time boats get that far up the coast, the unwashed crew are humming so badly that the council decided that something had to be done to stop other tourists being scared off.

Hmmm....showering extremities

Well in that case, I had one last week above 62degN.

I am sure there are loads can do better but, as well as above I can claim the following.

Higher than 62N
Lower than 31S
Further than 115E
Further than 124W

C'mon then.

With the sort of boating I do I just dont get terribly dirty over the course of a weekend. I have had terrible trouble running introductory trips for novices where most of the morning was spent waiting for the crew to return from the showers. I've missed the tide on more than one occasion!! Nowadays I'm a bit more cunning and set off at 7 while the crew are asleep. That way we can get a days sail in. It helps if you have made sure you have enough food, drink etc. on board before you go.
This summer we've been in the Baltic. Washings not a problem - you can bathe in the sea. The marinas are cheap enough to be affordable and people can shower in the evening.

Re: Hmmm....showering extremities

I've showered in Finland (Turku = 60 N) Iceland (Reykavik = 64 N) and Northern Alaska (Talkeetna = 62 N, and a way bit North of Denali National Park, Alaska = 64+ N) All on land though, so not quite the same. They wouldn't let me drive to North Slope 70+, though next time I'm going to ignore the insurance and do it anyway

New Zealand (South of North Island = 43 S). Planning on doing South Island and maybe Antartica later this year)

New Zealand = just about 180 W and E (east hand of north island depending on which way you look at it)

Re: Even further North..

Seeing you are talking of harbour showers I guess we don't have to be limited to showering in a yacht at sea, in which case:

approx 62 degrees N (Sveg, Sweden)
approx 48 degrees S (Invercargill, NZ)
Longitudes of every continent and some of the bits in between.

And coldest approx -20C (not in the shower though!).

Re: Don\'t believe you

No wonder the French eat smelly cheese - it is to kill the pong coming across the channel from the great unwashed English yachtsmen. It is not too bad to the East of Australia I have to confirm, but we are quite a way away of course. We don't have to wash at all here, Chile is plenty far enough away for us not to worry them (but maybe the hole in the ozone layer???). Reminds me, by the time most English yachtmen get to Cape Horn they have had a bath and then been rescued by the Australian navy.

Re: Don\'t believe you

Whilst there is a grain of truth in the lack of showers by some UK people, the australian perception of smelly Brits is based on immediate post WWII immigration. At that time a bath once a week whether needed or not was accepted. This is no longer the case.

The smelliest person I have ever come across in my 50 odd years experience around the world was an Australian serving on a RAN Warship!!!!
