Any thoughts on this (from a friend)?

Got a problem with my perkins 4108 / hurth gearbox combination once its been running for a while (say 1 hour). If you go to change into reverse at low revs it stalls. If you let the engine cool for 30 mins then do this it seems to work fine.

Normal temp comes up to 185-190 and stays there if you are around 2000 revs. No smoke at all.

Restarts if it stalls with no majors. Just seems to stall in reverse, if you put it into forward at lowish revs its fine...... and if its reasonably cold it can handle reverse fine.

Had similar problem this year with volvo md21b. traced problem to loose connection/bad fibre washer on diesil pump,

only happened when engine hot and when engaging reverse after being going forward ie. trying to manouvre( nearly had a few heart attacks until probem solved)

if you have changed the filter recently possibility of leak in seal?

I know exactly what it's likely to be. The very same thing happend on my 4.108 last year. On the main fuel pump, there is not only the normal bleed screws etc, but also another little adjuster, designed for just that purpose - to stop engine stalling when passing through idle.

I didn't fix it, an engineer friend did, so i can't tell you what he did. It is in the manual though.

Setting from manual.

Slacken locknut, screw down anti-stall device, then unscrew two turns.

Adjust idling speed to 625 revs per min.

Screw down anti- stall device until there is a very slight increase in engine speed. Bring back half a turn and lock.

Accelerate engine to max revs, and immediately return to idling.

Should the period of return from maximum revs exceed 3 seconds, the device has been screwed in too far.

If stalling occures, the device has not been screwed in enough.

Philip.
