Our generator packed in today, it made a funny noise and stopped. It wouldn't turn over.

I stripped it down and it looks like something off the head where the injector sits fell into the cylinder.

A squashed piece of metal. So the con rod is bent, the piston is damaged and the head is also damaged. Is it worth repairing?

I noticed Marine Enterprises has exactly the same engine for sale, Used.. 2 grand and no Providence. What to do.

Like for like swap sounds efficient. But no providence sounds like a £2k risk that could backfire with significant regret.
If you can get by without a generator, save up for a new engine.

Have you tried here? westendmarinebatleyltd.co.uk

I think the bit that fell in is the combustion chamber insert and a non replaceable item. At least new head required - from memory £1500+ then rod and piston, but if bore is damaged thats it. Also try here parts4engines.com/perkins-100s-perama-m20-m25-m30-m35-mc42/ for quote on parts.
PBO did an article on this issue a few years back. Basically the injector combustion chamber comes loose and does the biz on the engine. There used to be a bloke doing the Boat Jumble rounds a few years back who had a sourcefor new industrial engines of this type.

Thanks for the link.
It's exactly what happened to my Engine. I wasn't so lucky though, the engine actually stopped before I could stop it. I took the head off and there it was, number 3 cylinder with a bit of squashed metal on top of the piston.
Unfortunately it looks like the con rod is bent also as the engine can be turned over by hand about 180 D then comes up to a brick wall.
Due to the high number of hours on this engine, around k10 I don't think it would be cost effective to repair it.
I'm going to give Marine Enterprises a bell tomorrow and see what they advise. They have a number of Volvo md 2030s in stock which will be a slot in.

Slight word of caution. They are not very good at keeping their listings up to date. The listing for the 2030s has been on the site for 2 years to my knowledge but when I went to look at them about a year ago he did not actually have any, claiming he had sold them all to a Greek charter company!

A few months ago there was a thread here (can't trace it at the moment) about replacing a 2020 with a new base Perkins engine same as the latest D1 series using all the marinising bits from the old engine. He bought the engine from Westend and I think it was less than £2k for the base engine. Worth getting the latest engine as even the newest 2030 will be 20 years old

Before spending thousands on a used one, pull the old one, strip it and get the definitive as to what is broken. Then decide what to do, a new rod and pistons plus a new head? The rebuild kitfrom P4E isnt that expensive.
I keep thinking that converting my old garage in to a rebuild shop wouldnt be a bad idea!

Thanks all stripped down.
Decent Cylinder heads are almost impossible to obtain I have found out. There is a recon one on eBay for nearly 1k
The rest of the engine is worn out I guess. The hour meter stopped working two years ago on 10025 so I guess I don't want to throw money at it
We have a smaller petter gennie which is ok for now.

Just got off the phone with Marine Enterprises, really helpful guy. They have a M30 which has very low hours in stock, it's been run up and tested and is all good. Shipped out today I'll fit it tomorrow . I know it's old stock, but needs must. The waiting list for a new beta is quite long

I think I have found the cause of my catastrophic failure to my Engine the other day.
I took the exhaust elbow off today ready for the new engine and it was almost blocked solid with black crud which is as hard as rock.
I think the exhaust water backed up and flowed into the number 3 cylinder and knocked the injector distributor off and bent the Conrod.
That's the only thing I can think of.

Thanks..240 quid😭 I'll see if I can clean the old one up with my pencil grinder.
I have a Perkins 102-05 generator. Same block as the Volvo 2010. Its the same base engine as Northern Lights but mine is the 2 cylinder 3000rpm unit not a 3 cylinder 1500rpm unit. I had a constant problem with the cast Iron exhaust elbow. It would need decoking every 100hrs or lose power. I fitted a cast stainless steel elbow of a northern lights genny. Bigger bore and completely trouble free after 5 years. Massive difference
