PERKINS P4/P6 DIESLE ENGINE WITH HYDRAULIC OPERATED GEAR BOX
[PRE 1966]
Searching for:-
Seals for oil cooler for engine
Seals for oil filter

Name of gear box is:-
Self changing gears LTD - Coventry
Unit 30286 List 5450

INFO NEEDED
What oil pressure does this gear box work at?
What grade of oil is needed for this gear box and engine oil?
Where can I obtain a manual or instruction leaflet for the gear box? /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Any ideas why the gear box makes a scraping noise while in reverse, it runs quiet in forward gear?

Any ideas or names of suppliers or agents regarding above would be welcome.

I have tried to find out about the gear box but nobody seems to know anything.

Hello Alwyn,

Same problem I just have here in Ireland with my small fishing trawler. Same questions you have asked I am now also asking. Could you please get back to me if you have any info or contacts on gearbox and I will do visa versa. Searched I'Net but no luck. Stopped fishing here at the moment due to gearbox, so think I'll have to dismantle in the morning to see what is wrong.

Looking forward to your reply.

Patrick.

My SCG gearboxes (1960 vintage) run over 100 psi at cold start up and at idle (warmed up) approx 70 psi. The grade of oil required is SAE30 (as detailed in the manual). The scraping noise in reverse sounds like either the reverse friction cone lining is worn out, or there is excessive fore/aft play in the gear train. If you suspect the friction lining (nasty burnt smell from the oil) don't use it! - I had a forward lining burn out due to a partially siezed shaft, and it wrecked the steel forward drive cone - £400 for the part and 2 days sweat to change it. The output shaft seals are available from any bearing/seal suppliers - just take an old one along and they'll match it - get "double lipped" type as replacements - they're less inclined to weep. If you need a manual mail me and I'll do you a photocopy. A Company that provided spares for SCG boxes disappeared recently, but I think GB Marine on 01827 7183501 may be able to help.
