Daft question alert!
Entering a white sails racing reggata later this year, and just wondered about pennants....are they generally supplied by the organization, or do I need to get one....if so where? many thanks

You supply your own. Available from most good chandlers.

I've twice made my own in extremis.

Know of one case where someone was protested, but I wouldn't expect that to happen in whitesails.

Once made our own, in extremis, for the Round the Island Race. Seem to remember cannibalising a purple sleeping bag cover and a pair of white underpants from one of the crew. He later complained of unusual wear and tear on his prize assets when on the rail in a beat....

I do sometimes wonder if the people charged with selecting which class should fly which pennant also consider the meaning of each one under the International Code of Signals. As a multihull sailor we are frequently required to fly the pennant "M" ( ICS meaning - "My vessel is stopped and making no way through the water.") whist busy sailing at 15 knots plus....

A supplementary thought, the Sailing Instructions (SIs) should tell you which pennant you need for the class entered - most often simply one of the numeral 1-5 ones

Edit: oh, and while youre out racing dont fly your ensign as well ok

If the class flag for the regatta is an numeral or code flag then you almost always have to provide your own. It's not unheard of though for the organisers to provide class flags though if say the sponsor wants them to be various different versions of their flag.

Always wondered, if you are racing a British registered boat in a race in another counties waters, do you still remove the ensign for the duration of the race?

If so my protest some years ago now on a uk club regatta in Dutch waters should have been allowed and we would have won the race as we were the only one to remove the ensign!

Flying your national ensign in another countries territorial waters is a legal requirement. But then so are road speed limits and who sticks to them?

Thats as mebbe, and though its a while since I raced in a Cowes week I cant remember any of the Dutch, French, Irish etc competitors flying anything other than their racing pennant whilst actually racing
