Pelican hooks or snapshackles....

Pelican hooks! Their advantages are that they take up the slack as they are closed and lock shut, either with a ring or other mechanical device. A snap shackle remains the same length during operation, so you can't get any tension into the guardwire. Typically they are also used with a lanyard attached for release which could snag and release accidentally.

Ordinarily MY view but the Pelicans I just bought from a well known chandler have very slack rings and if the tension came off they could easily open.

Thay are on HR. :encouragement:

And Island Packet.

I fitted tiny-the smallest available-shackles to the pin instead of the ring, as First Mate struggled to pull them open.
I cow hitched a cord with a small ball to the shackles-it is now a doddle to open them.

IIRC I had to deep six the shackle pins and change for split pins-the drilled hole was too small for the shackle pins.

MY Bavaria doesn't have them. Sure they were OE?

Cannot say 100%, but they were on the boat when I bought her, and she was only 6 yo at the time. Could not see any of the rigging / guard wires having been replaced.
Anyway, I replaced the plastic covered guard wires for plain wire, and of bigger diameter, and fitted new pelican hooks as in photo. They are excellent.

Those pictured are very flash. I find pelikcan hooks with a sliding sleeve are fine. A snap shackle requires that you take up more slack just to get the snap hook over the loop then it will go slack. You also need to be able to take up slack to get the snap shackle undone. So totally unsuitable for lifelines. olewill

I have a pelican hook with a ring on the end of my detachable inner forestay, normally attached to a U-bolt alongside the shrouds. The genoa sheets frequently knock the ring up, at which the forestay dangles anywhere it likes. To overcome the problem I tie the ring down, not pretty and would be inconvenient if the forestay was used more often. So I think I would choose a snap-shackle, or one of those fancy pelican hooks.

How important is it to have bar tight guard wires anyway? Isn't that just unnecessary stress on everything?
