Hi has anyone by any chance seen/ read August's edition with regards to a Vertue trying this year's Jester challenge?

Yes, I've just read it in the current edition - it's rather confusing in magazine world generally as the January edition seems to come out in October - and so on!

In the October 2024 edition there is an article on page 34 "First time offshore in a small boat". I have not read it yet, just scanned it, but there is a photograph with the caption "the drogue on the Virtue II is kept in the cockpit and deployed through the bottomless bucket to avoid snagging".

Well I wish I'd never read it to be honest. Some bloke on about load of useless mods which had been carried out on a Vertue ... What a turnip

You will only be deploying it in challenging conditions - and the means should cater for them.

I have not read the article - but good for you to have considered the extremes.

What is dangerous? The Vertue, bottomless buckets, or "the drogue". Can you summarise what "pardey,skip Novak & Tom Cunliffe" advise are the reasons to "avoid at all costs"?

Assuming @gaylord694 is talking about drogues. This is what Skip Novak thinks, who, by the way, has never used one, and actually states that on small craft, single handing, they may be a good idea.

Skip Novak's Storm Sailing Techniques Part 7: drogues

... But before I get carried away with this lecture, I have to admit to something: I have never tried a sea anchor nor a drogue. ...

For smaller boats and those sailing single- or short-handed, however, using a sea anchor or drogue might be an interesting, possibly lifesaving procedure. But it is one that must be practised, so that when you do it for real everything is spot on. In my case, on medium to larger craft (say, above the 50ft range), I consider the idea not worth the risk – and the risk can be high.

Using drogues – do they work?​

Skip Novak’s view is clear: although drogues could be a lifesaver on small boats of, say, less than 50ft, he would feel nervous about deploying the gear on bigger, heavier vessels. For smaller yachts, however, there is anecdotal evidence that series drogues, in particular, are valuable. Drogues might also have value on light-displacement boats that won’t heave to or are running downwind under bare poles near wave-speed.

I'm surprised there's room for a bucket as cockpit looks very cluttered

Well there's even more clutter now on this boat. Think the guy thinks he's RKJ about to go around the horn. I've never seen so much equipment crammed onto such a tiny little boat..

My pennyworth for what it is worth about drogues is there are fans and there are doubters. To clarify your own thought I suggest you should read Roger Taylor's books. He is a believer in them refer to `chap 24 & onwards of his 2nd book MingMing& the art of minimal ocean sailing. He describes his drogue, it deployment and loss and then as a follow up chap 14 onwards in his 3rd book Ming Ming & the tonic of wildness. He describes his struggles trying to recover his drogue. It was this in part as well as the expense and "clutter" on a small boat which persuade me not to bother with one on my ocean voyages.

I’ve no idea who Skip Novak is, but if he thinks anything less than 50ft is small, I don’t think he’s the guru for my boating life

Well I'd rather have a para anchor , personally I'd rather have a boat bow on to the waves in a blow rather than a stern onto a huge sea and then you've got the polaver of getting the bugger back in
