Anyone using a GPS patch Antenna for AIS transceiver. Any recommendations for same. Don't particularly want to mount it on the rail.

If it works, I'm interested too, but I ha' me doots.
AIS works on around 160MHz, while GPS works on ~1100 and ~1600 MHz so, AIUI, antenna needs are very different.

There's no chance of it working. As @Stemar says, the frequencies are vastly different, and at AIS frequencies you'd probably get more signal from the leads to the antenna than from the antenna!

I assume you mean using the gps patch ant for the gps feed, this is what my matsutec uses and it works fine.
I think others are assuming you mean use a gps ant for the actual ais signal which is a no go.

Your question is a bt confusing a bit confusing. Obviously you do not want to use a patch antenna for AIS signal but rather for the GPS signal. (a patch antenna could be built for 160mhz but would quite big witha poor radiation pattern in the horizontal) Now a patch antenna may be good for 1100 mhz but the problem is cable losses from antenna to AIS and that is assuming AIS has a GPS receiver built in. Probably not. So what is needed and used is a GPS puck which includes the GPS antenna and receiver in one with power and data connecting wires. Quite cheap but usually in the form of a dome or bubble shape on roof or similar. ol'will

I think ais transceivers have to have their own gps, I could easily be wrong.

ICOM provided me a patch antenna for the AIS GPS after the external antenna failed twice. The patch stuck on a window works fine.

Hi Paul. Onwa KP200A+ Think I have it sussed now. My original question was incorrect. What I wanted to know if feasible to use a patch GPS for the ais. From the replies I got it seems I can. Another question if l may. My Garmin 551 backlight has failed. Do you fix these? Cheers

Still not clear what it is you are trying to do. AIS data needs a VHF antenna or a splitter. The unit also needs GPS data, for which you will need a GPS antenna.
Onwa have a suitable GPS antenna, Aves Marine
