Passage Anchorage Grimsby/ Humber

We are en route to Edinburgh. Tomorrow’s leg is aclong one from Lowestoft to Grimsby. Was originally thinking of using Spurn Head in the Humber as the anchorage overnight but with SW winds was wondering what the local recommendation would be? Off Haile Sand Fort? We draw 1.8m and arrival tomorrow is going to be in the dark so an easy in is also a consideration.. The plan is to push on the following day towards Scarborough. Any advice please?

Forget the Humber, though anchoring off the fort will be fine, if bumpy. Instead, make tomorrow's passage shorter and go to Wells in Norfolk. It's a charming place and has good visitor facilities. The entrance is winding but not difficult, especially with an offshore breeze. You'll be well-rested and happy for a passage straight to Scarborough.

It makes for a slightly longer second day, but far more interesting and fun IMO.

Thanks for the quick reply. We really wanted to get into Wells but with HW at 1340 tomorrow and a 9 hour passage from Lowestoft the prospect of a 4am departure didn’t really appeal to the Admiral..I spoke to the HM office there and they were pretty adamant they didn’t want us on after HW. Is the local knowledge different? Again any advice appreciated.

Going in on a rising tide is a must, and there should be plenty of water to stay afloat at the downstream end of the pontoon.

I went straight from Whitby to Lowestoft. Going north, Wells shortens it by a bit, but not really very much as you're going off the direct route. The same goes for going into the Humber; you're adding quite a lot of miles for doubtful benefit; a night at anchor in those waters might not be restful. The navigation from the N Haisboro light to the headland east of Whitby couldn't be much simpler - steer 330 for 20-odd hours! I did the 126nm in about 26 hours; three of us made it doable. My autopilot had broken so it was one steering, one on lookout and one resting. With the autopilot, it might have been one on watch, one resting in the cockpit and one below, which would have been a bit more relaxing. Of course, if the wind is favourable (it wasn't for us) you'd adjust duties accordingly.

Appreciate the advice, I think if we had an additional crew member we would go for that option as yes it’s a good milage saving.

There is the Tetney Haven anchorage which should be sheltered from southerly winds. There's a boat club there, the Humber Mouth Yacht club. Your draft may be a problem but give them a ring 07505 963255. Hope you pick this up as l just noticed that you will already be on passage.

Thanks everyone for the help. Not the nicest of passages as the Southwesterlies forecast were Westerlies which meant most of the day beating to windward. Anchored off of Haile Sand Fort at the moment. A little rolly but much nicer than what we have been through today.
