Fair's fair. If you want a smooth and quiet motor buy a Yamaha.
If you want to spend less and the less refined product isn't an issue, buy a Parsun.

You generally get what you pay for.

Having said that, noisy and rough doesn't equate with unreliable.

Indeed.

So far the Chinese have not managed to achieve acceptable quality standards.

However, perhaps, it is only a matter of time before they compete against better makes in quality and reliability; and until this happens i will carry on buying products with quality and reliable pedigree. So, No to Parsun as yet.

Lots of well considered speculation and PBO tests but really just curious whether they work and last ok over a few years. Yes chinese made but so are most things for sale these days!

Buy cheap, buy twice I say.

A friend of mine has spent most of his working life in engineering, buying from and selling to the Chinese. He has often said, if you want cheap krap, then the Chinese will make it for you, but if you want high quality, they will make that as well. So yes many things are made in PRC, but brands like Susuki or Yamaha will not risk their reputation on low quality manufacturing.

I've got one, a 9.9hp e/s s/shaft as a auxiliary on my Colvic Northerner (you might like to see my outboard bracket) which I bought new last year. As I said it is only a back up, so hardly used and only run in fresh water. when I took it back for the first service I mentioned I was disappointed with the corrosion under the paintwork just below the lid/rubberseal-a few inches of it. I did take the boat in salt water for about 3 months but as I said the motor wasn't run only for testing purposes whilst stationary. It was eventually agreed that they would pay for the rectification, which won't take place till the next service; we'll see.

Wish I'd Bought a Name Brand

I bought a 5 hp 4-stroke Parsun (F5BM) from a Web site here in Canada in May 2009. The motor ran okay (but was somewhat rough and noisy) for 7 hours but started to sputter after that. At 8 hours of use, it died and would not start again.

The Parsun dealer in western Canada gave me the runaround on a warranty repair and stopped communicating when I asked for my money back. They've since disappeared and I've been left with a fairly new but unusable Parsun.

Today, a Google search magically turned up a new dealer in the province of Quebec. Their site includes two Parsun service bulletins (http://www.mticanada.ca/products/parsun_en.html) about stalling problems with the 5 hp Parsuns.

I took out the internal fuel tank and, sure enough, the filter had slipped into the fuel line and blocked it completely. After removing the filter, I was able to get the outboard to fire up. It still isn't running 100% but I'm certainly encouraged. I haven't heard back from the dealer about replacing the gas valve seal which could be the complete fix.

As far as I can tell, there are no authorized repair or parts depots for these in Canada. That's a bad sign for any product.

I would not buy another Parsun (or other cheap Chinese knockoff) unless there were a reliable, well-stocked dealer within easy driving distance who honours the warranty.

Even then, I'd probably avoid the grief completely by paying the extra for a Honda outboard. My old 7.5 Honda 4-stroke has been dunked 3 times and still starts and runs fine.

Parsun 15hp 2 stroke short shaft

I don`t understand your lack of knowledge when it comes to Parsun motors.I have a 15hp 2 stroke and it is a fantastic motor .When I was looking around I found out that Parsun back in the early 90`s made some of the johnson smaller motors and they where great. Then when I did some more research I found out that Parsun makes alot of parts for, YOU guessed it Yamaha .

A friend of mine has immersed his 2.6 overnight. Anyone got a link for buying new ignition components?
Defore anyone jumps in, it has been fully flushed clean and turns over fine.:D

Who was the dealer Ken..?
