Having arrived safely at Burnham-on-Crouch, I decide to do the sensible thing and buy a set of paper charts of the Crouch & Roach to use if the plotter fails. When I opened the sealed pack back on the boat I found that they were dated 2000... 7 years old.

Is this normal? Should I take it back and get a newer version? Is there a newer version and how can I find out?

All leisure charts are bought out of date unless you happen to find one that has just been re issued.

If you buy Admiralty charts from an authorised agent they will have manually updated the chart.
the better diligent Admiralty agents also update the leisure charts.(SC series).

Imray charts may be a few years old and should be sold with a list of updates that you need to put on before you use the chart /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

If you check out the manufactures web site it should tell you when the chart was issued.

Best to buy Admiralty charts from a pukka agent but they are a bit bigger and more difficult to store on small boats.

I have found the odd Chandlers that do update their charts, one in Cobb's Quay used to and Ron Watts on Grimsby Docks used to including none Admiralty.

Of course updating is a great opportunity to practise your chart skills /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I have checked the admirality website.. they only list updates from 2003 for leisure charts, and the SC3750 has only one correction listed since then.

Not much alters around the Crouch/Blackwater area except the sand banks keep moving, stick to the bouyed channels and you should be ok, straight lining is a job for the excavators although sometimes you may get away with it. Look up Ron "Island Hopper" he will put you straight. Tell him John sent you. Welcome to the back of beyond. PS OUR CHARTS STILL HAVE "HERE BE SERPENTS AND DRAGONS" printed thereon, and signiture that looks like F. Drake, ?

There has only been a few corrections previously to 2003 one in 2000 and 2 in 2001

Like some have already said the leisure editions are only correct up til time of print. As long as yours doesn't say 2005 edition or 2006 edition or previous to that but on the front says 1st edition onwards you should have the correct edition.

UKHO stopped printing Leisure Editions every year and now bring out new editions of the Leisure Edition when the new editions of Standard BA comes out.

Again like someone has already said the only charts that you can buy fully updated are from those who provide the services like Chart Agents.

Imray are the same with their form of charts as someone already said they should come with a list of corrections.

You should always keep your charts up to date. Electronic Charts are only an aid to navigation and shouldn't be fully trusted because they're run by electronics. Always carry some form of paper back up!

If you want to know the corrections to be added to that chart PM me and I'll dig them out for you!
