On hearing a Pan Pan....

Get out the knives and forks ( thanks Vyv!)

Otherwise, the procedure is (as I was taught it), wait to see if the Coast Guard respond (so that you do not over speak their response as rescue co-ordinators). Head immediately towards the casualties' location. If after 2 - 3 minutes if you have heard no official response, respond to the caller telling them your posiiton and ETA. Then try to raise the CG yourself to inform them of the call.

If the Cg have picked up the call, you wait until they have spoken to the casualty, then call the casualty yourself giving your ETA. CG should hear you and will co-ordinate with any others who are coming in to help. After that its basic common sense as the situation develops. Continue to use the channel the casualty and the coastguard have been using - usually Ch16. You may have to relay messages between CG and casualty if the CG can not themselves hear the casualty clearly.

If the situation is resolved before you get there, Cg will call you telling you you may 'stand down'.
