painting galvanised steel

does anybody know of any household , accids etc that will take the shine off galvanised to enable it to be painted ,without paint flaking off after a few months

I don't know, but whatever it is, be sure it doesn't take off the zinc altogether.

you need to use an etch primer, available from decorators warehouses, you may find special metal primer at b&q. I got the small amount i needed at a coach builders for nothing.

calcium plumbate primer ( yellow colour )
then paint as normal

If you can bear the appearance of it for a while, just leave it to weather for a few months. The shine will disappear leaving a matt grey finish which is perfect for painting.

Mordant solution.
Turns the galvanizing grey/black and allows the paint to stick.
