Only speculation but I guess it would stop the genoa unravelling in a blow should the furling line come loose ..... I've seen this happen to boats moored on the lake where I live. Nasty mess.

Every time I anchor or moor, unless planning on only a few hours stay, I make a lashing through the clew cringle around the furled sail. I learned this the hard way, having to get up in the night once in a rising gale when the furling line jam-cleat failed.

If I leave the boat for any appreciable time I take down the sail completely and stow below - it's a major undertaking alone to roll and pack on the foredeck but worth the peace of mind.

On the boat now. The holes are 6mm dia and I have the smallest size Plastimo padlocks with 6mm loop and 25mm wide. Fit well and have had no problems with them. Will look up the catalogue number when I get home,

Just a quick pointer. Are you sure the padlocks are 6mm?
I ask because if the holes are 6mm diameter you would have difficulty passing through a padlock that was made out of 6mm diameter bar due to the curved corners of the bar if you see what I mean.

Just to clear up the confusion... I have a Harken reefing gear which has a hole on the rim of the drum..I put a padlock through it so the drum cannot turn. Using a set of Plastimo pass padlocks, I can walk round the deck and unlock everything with one key.

Yes, the holes have a chamfer on them (see the OPs photo). The padlocks I recommended fit snugly. Seem to remeber trying 2 or 3 different types before buying these.
