It is recommended that the paddle wheel on the speed sensor is antifouled, but the paint must not contain ketones. I was thinking of applying some Hempel eco prop primer, and ecopower prop. Much googling has not given me any answers. What, if anything do members on here use.

Why do you need to antifoul a speed paddle wheel when the blanking bung is in situ most of the time? I don't even antifoul the blanking bung as it is cleaned every time I remove it use the speed sensor.

I paint mine just carefully on the "fins" with a painters brush and spray silicon into the spindle, been doing that for what must be over 15 years and not seen any degradation to the unit. Most of the time it works throughout the season. I use eroding antifouling and no primer.

I don't seem to have a blanking plug.

Never used anything on mine .... if it stops working ... usually a twist in the mount and back again gets it working again.

When I lift out ... sometimes many years staying in ... unit is still relatively clear ..

I usually put some silicon grease on. When we kept on the move it was effective enough and I could do a 3-months cruise without cleaning it, Now I settle for regular cleaning, which is easy enough and the grease delays fouling for a week or two perhaps. If antifouling, one would need to cover the impeller and all its surrounds to have much effect, so I've never bothered.

IMHO - painting could actually cause a problem ... as the wheel has a tiny spindle axle to rotate on ... it does not take much crud to stop that from turning ... bit hamfisted with the brush and voila - spindle is stuck.

I don't think you could say the same in the Mediterranean. Even with Velox the tube worm needs to be scraped off monthly. Without it my log impeller will stop rotating in around a week if at anchor throughout.
