I have some oxalic acid and I am wondering how best to use it.

My boat, Merry Fisher 625, has a few spots of ingrained rust on the cream coloured GRP gelcoat and I believe that this will remove it but what is the best way to apply it/use it?

Can it be used as a general cleaner in weak solution?

Are there any precautions I should take regarding the boat and potentially damaging it... obviously, personal precautions go without saying /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Sorry... I am sure that this comes up a regular intervals but the lack of a decent search means I haven't checked /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

i wd use oxalic on actual rust or on rusty stains on gelcoat frinstance, but not really as general purpose cleaner. There's a product called Y10 (whi-ten geddit?) which is effectively oxalic acid in a gel. You need to rinse it off but it won't cause massive damage.

INgrained spots of rust - The oxalic will prolly just get rid f the rustiness bit but leave the metal. A rubbing compound better, or even a bit of wetdry sandpaper like 600 aplied wet to remove the ingrained rust thing first, then polish it back with the rubbing compound.
