Over, Out and Over and Out

I went into Dover on Monday and had two examples which show both sides of the coin.

First off we had the Pride of Canterbury talking to Port Control

Canterbury Control, topline 15 minutes, thank you Sir.

That was it, no over, no out but the message was got across. They knew they had finished, I knew they had finished and then I got in with my request to enter Eastern.

Next up, I'm trying to book a marina berth on channel 80 ( a duplex channel so I can't here what other ships are saying).

Dover Marina this is Balmain Bug Over
Can you tell me your Length & Draught.
Dover Marina this is Balmain Bug are you talking to me, over?
I'm talking to yacht xxxxxxxxx

(so I shut up for a bit)

Station Calling Dover Marina
Dover Marina this is Balmain bug, requesting a berth for the night over
Can you tell me your length and draught

(I still didn't know if he was talking to me or not, but he was and I got it sorted),

I think my point is that on a duplex channel over and (later) out, would be a jolly helpful thing, also that you definitely have to do Called Station/ Calling Station at the beginning of EVERY transmission.

qsiv - I work in offshore oil industry operations on board a ship and constantly use VHF on selected channels to communicate with Rig Floors, my personnel on board the rig, Company Reps, drillers, radio room etc and yes double cliks to signify end of transmission now appears to be the accepted norm. - CLICK-CLICK

oooooh, and you were doing so well then too, personally if I had joined the navy as I wanted I would have spent most of my career in the glasshouse.

I work alongside the RAF and love the fact the occifers don't know how to handle us civvies. But, the general behaviour on the VHF is atrocious, so I do agree in some parts.

Not boaty but radio usage nonetheless.

When I went to work in the Sahara in Libya in 1980, we had 2 Americans with us who went by the names of Grover Cates & CJ Rodgers. We used to have a variety of vehicles including Landrovers. Well a particular Scots wag who was with us latched on to a story about when Grover rolled his Rover and had a radio conversation with Rodgers about the incident It was wickedly funny at the time.

'Hello, Rodgers this is Grover, over'
'Roger Grover this is Rodgers, over'
'Roger, Rodgers, this is Grover. I've rolled the Rover over, over'

and so it went on. Had us in absolute stitches.

No. I am on Mooses side. Those words (I will not mention them out of consideration) should only be used in special cases when they are needed to ensure absolute clarity - one example of which seems to be when talking to people of miltary origin who clearly cannot anticipate them.

Again in consideration of Moose - dahdahdah didididah di didahdi.

and for whats its worth - I was trained by the Royal Signals and over and out were compulsary, but NOT together at the same time - OUT was the last thing you said when you finished the conversation.

With regard to VHF - still waiting for my training course - had my name on the list for months for the next course /forums/images/icons/mad.gif -

Lots of good points in this thread, much mirth and daftness too, but one point has (I think) still been missed from all the postings, namely that there IS a fool-proof way of communicating unambiguously between two stations without the need for 'over' or 'out'.

The method is used in aviation and uses call-signs to 'wrap' the phrase. Eg:

An approaching aircraft (Mike Zulu Uniform) would call George Airport with:
"George Approach, final approach runway 26, Mike Zulu Uniform"

The reply from the ground would be:
"Mike Zulu Uniform, cleared for landing runway 26, winds 090 at 5kts, George Approach"

On that basis, the aircraft would (legally) land.

Everyone knows when the transmission is over because it ends with the station's callsign. By comparison, the marine style of packing both called and calling stations' names at the front of the message looks clumbsy:

Maritime style: "George Approach, this is Mike Zulu Uniform, final approach runway 26, over"
Aviation style: "George Approach, final approach runway 26, Mike Zulu Uniform"

The aviation style saves 25% on airtime and is (necessarily) just as safe!

I personally try to avoid using 'over' or 'out' , especially when dealing with an obviously proficient/professional user at the other end - unless it is absolutely necessarily to avoid confusion. I realise that this probably breaks the rules and winds up the Marine VHF afficionados who winge about 'discipline' but I am happy to use a proven, efficient and effective model, even if it is borrowed from another environment!
