any advice?
i am running a 3 cylinder lister engine in my fishing boat the problem i have is that after an hour of running it appears to over heat.
as these are air cooled i assume they run very hot any way.
however the oil seems to get very thin and almost boils away.
any one had similar problems if so what can i do.

Hi,

I am running a 4 Cy air cooled deutz. Do you have an airduct large enough to blow the ait out AND does the air intake to the engine get enough air.

On my deutz the cylinder head heat sensor comes on at 150 Cel. but it never did.

You could measure the cyl head temperature and the oil temperature.

No sure about the lster, but the deutz has an oil cooler and cools the oil before it goes into the bearings. If your engine sump oil does not get warmer than 120, there is nothing to worry.

You could also measure the air coming from the engine. In my case the air is virtually the same temperature as the heads. Exhaust gas temperature might be another indicator, but not normally done on diesels.

Best is also to get the original manual for the Lister, I have an LT1 manual, but dont think that would help you.

regards ongolo

Pm me for further discussion, dont think air cooled engine is of general concern.

Daren,
Make sure that the grill round the flywheel fan is clear of debris, dog hairs etc. and that the fan is not damaged. Make sure that the ducting from the fan round the cylinders is sound with no appreciable leaks and that the cylinder fins are clear of similar debris. Make sure that the 'exhaust' air is ducted away from the engine room.
I had a SL3 for many years. Brilliant engine and seemingly indestructible, but the noise! She always ran quite hot. but probably not like yours.
Other points to check are prop size and engine revs. From memory maximum revs were 1800, at which you should get maximum speed.
Cheers, Dave.
