Re: \'Eats shoots and leaves...\'

My pet hate:

"Different to" instead of "different from".

It makes me squirm whenever I see or hear it.

Eye halve a spelling chequer
It came with my pea sea
It plainly marques four my revue
Miss steaks eye kin knot sea

Eye strike a key and type a word
And weight four it two say
Weather eye am wrong oar write
It shows me strait a weigh

As soon as a mist ache is maid
It nose bee four two long
And eye can put the error rite
Its rare lea ever wrong

Eye have run this poem threw it
am shore your pleased two no
Its letter perfect awl the weigh
My chequer tolled me sew.

It literally makes my blood boil when I hear words misused.

The rash of Move to the Country/Town/France/Top of our Stairs programmes we are being subjected to has a never-ending supply of presenters who wilfully use "panorama" and "vista" as interchangeable nouns. /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif

If you don't understand apostrophe's for Gods dake do'nt use them at all, its very annoying.

[/ QUOTE ]

Do you mean "don't"?

[/ QUOTE ]

Check the fuse in your Irony Detector!

[/ QUOTE ]

My irony detector picked that one out, but what is "dake"????

...then there's "septic" and "sceptic".

Re: Ought to be - correct spellings sort.

While we're on the subject of septics...

What about the word "Schedule"..

IT IS NOT PRONOUNCED SKEDULE!!! (they even do it on Radio 4! Grrrr)

Bloomin' fillystynes

Don't get me started on the "Union Jack"!!! *mutter mutter*

Re: Ought to be - correct spellings sort.

Even worse - the septics can't even read letters in the right order at times -

'new-kew-ler' is not the way the word nuclear is written..
'aloominum' is not the way aluminium is written..
'evidence of WMDs' doesn't mean the same as 'no evidence of WMDs at all'

Re: Ought to be - correct spellings sort.

Superstrath; fnarr fnarr! Irony fuse! I love it!

Twister Ken, that was a fair cop, a bloody annoying spelling error ('specially as I was being so pedantic at the time!). And shame I neglected to notice a double post! A lesson in kind, I think.

"This train will terminate here". Bloody expensive use of rolling stock...

Agree wholeheartedly with "SKEDule" over here. Yerrcchh!

"At this moment in time.." Well, when else?

"..will be landing momentarily.." Hell, I want to get off in New York!!

Or the universal favourite of TV cooks, "TaKe the meat out of the oven and pour over the sauce!" Me, I do it the other way around. Just to be pedantic, you understand!

Aah! The richness of the English language!

And Raedweld, Neraida and others, this is a topic on grammar, not Xenophobia, please!. I agree that Dubya shouldn't say "Nucyuler" but the Yanks do spell the element with the symbol Al as "Aluminum" so it is not unreasonable that that should pronounce it so, is it? After all, we must remember they don't actually speak English. Likewise they are quite entitled to say "SKEDuled", even though that grates over here. Should they say "Toe-mah-toe too? Hell No!

Can't say I understood your remark about WMD though (perhaps because it's an obscure political/xenophobic allusion, as opposed to a grammatical one?)

Re: Ought to be - correct spellings sort.

A "skeptic" is American! /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Re: Ought to be - correct spellings sort.

Then again, I can't say much as I always seem to refer to your ID as "RadWeld" /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Cheers

Re: Ought to be - correct spellings sort.

haha 'RadWeld' is cool - you and the Major both /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

If septic = septic tank = yank
is being antiseptic what that nice Mr Blair has been telling us all off for?

.......but do they? Do they pronounce like that because they spell like that? Or does the spelling follow the pronunciation? Chickens and eggs come to mind.
