Son has just bought an old (1985 ish) 40HP, 2-cylinder, 2-stroke OB for his RIB. It runs OK at low and mid revs and for about 30secs at full power then one cylinder seems to cut out. After a bit it cuts back in.
We have tried:- new plugs, checked the impeller, removed and cleaned the carbs, by-passed the fuel pump and filter with a new fuel line directly onto the the carb inlet and manually pumping the fuel (from a new tank). Its new fuel & new oil.

When it has its problem there is a red light on the front next to the fuel inlet which comes on.

Any ideas??

Thanks in advance...

I know a man in Crouch/Blacwkater that can have a look when you get fed up.

Have you got s make model and serial number, I may have a manual.

Strongly suspect an HT/Charging problem.

The Yamaha Autolube(which is a 2-stroke engine) have a red light at the front which indicates low oil in the reservoir. You use straight petrol and the engine mixes the oil in. The red light comes on and the revs are limited when the oil is low.

This is a 2-stroke; so far I have found that the red-light is a general warning/overheat light. Just wondering if the shutting down is a "safety" thing to reduce temperature? But we get water from the tell-tail & the impellers been checked?
Faulty temperature sensor??

The engine that MArkdj described is a 2 stroke. The oil is mixed in from a separate oil tank rather than premixed when it is put in with the petrol.

Ah! I'll check but I think its a straight mix jobbie; he's not been told otherwise and I haven't seen any signs of an oil filler. It's pretty ancient........
