outboard cooling question

Should all of the cooling water running through a modern 4 stroke outboard come out of the prop and the tell tale?

I've just run mine out of the water with muffs on, and most of the water is coming out where the red arrow points on the pic, from a 1 inch dia hole in the bottom of the main shaft casing (the hole is meant to be there). This is directly above where the lower casing is bolted to the shaft casing. This water is cold, and the lesser amount of water from the prop and tell tale are almost too hot to touch. It's a Honda BF30, and has just been serviced.

I'm guessing this means I have a problem?

Nick I'm not an expert Honda man, but it sounds like ( the lower leg has been removed to fit new impeller) that something has not been assembled correctly as water should be forced up the tube inside the casing to pump around the engine.

When the muffs are on water should just be pumped up inside the casing, if water is leaking out then a seal on the tube must have been incorrectly fitted or displaced when the lower leg was refitted to the upper case.

I'm with you on that one. Muffs are not overly efficient but water should not be coming out of that area, and if pee pee stream is hot then there maybe a problem that needs checking.

+1 Suspect impellor housing not seated correctly?

Hence as VP said water not getting pushed up the tube but escaping via the housing...

Have you read the manual on flushing the engine? I know on my Suzuki I have to tape up various holes when running out of the water with a hosepipe, so that the system works properly.

That is not right. I agree w VP. When they bolted gearbox back on they failed to engage the tube that carries cooling water to the power head into the pump outlet. Easy enough error if er you are a boat fixer in SofF. Needs fixing. Pull gearbox off again and redo

Thanks to all for the info. Local Honda dealer has been a PITA to deal with, so it wouldn't surprise me at all if the engineer got it wrong. I'll get them back.

I have never seen water come out of my honda 30 at that location. You should get a jet from the pee hole at the bottom of the hood roughly where it shows 2 'nipples' on your picture. Last time I serviced my old engine I used an adaptor for the water rather than a muff. May well end up servicing this new one once the warranty has expired.

On the Honda BF30A there is hole designed in the water tube that allows water so squirt out inside the mid case. The only place it can go is down to the bottom of the mid case and out the drain holes designed at the bottom of the center section. Have been through this thinking I had a problem but the new water tube is the same as the one I took out. I presume Honda had a good reason for this design but I have not found the reason yet.

Even with this water being ejected out of the water tube inside the mid case there is plenty of water coming out of the tell tail so it does not hurt anything. It could possibly be cooling the center section as the engine exhaust is dumped inside the center section and could get pretty hot if not cooled some way.
