Our first time in St. Katherine's.

Re: A biased overview :)

Just checked for us (was thinking of going up) and at 13m we tip over the magic £100 per night. Weekly rate is better but that's just too rich. I can get a hotel room for £140. We used to pay around £45 per night which was outstanding value. Alas.

Re: A biased overview :)

Limehouse .
Not anywhere now so cheap as some like to pretend.
Possibly some attractions for the Frey Bentos cuisine sorts with short arms an deep pockets.Gandalfs pub nearbye. Not much for anyone else except a few eateries on the fume filled A12 nearbye. Only real method of escape from this semi industral area is the DLR.

I like your salty prose, but I don't agree with you about Limey.

So, here's another view!

The Grapes is a great pub.

Food in the Narrow is decent, but yeah expensive, the views are great.

La Verde restaurant/ cafe is highly recommended.

The nearby jazz club has a fantastic atmosphere, if that's your thing.

You can run/ walk/ kayak or cycle for traffic free mile after mile along the canals, if that's your thing.

Mile stadium, with superb public running track, is a five minute jog along the canal.

Vikki Park is delightful, and a leisurely 30 minute stroll away.

Two stops into Bank or Tower Gateway on the DLR.

I'll take Limey over St Kats any day, thanks.

Re: A biased overview :)

+1! It's far closer to transport (DLR) than St Katz is to Tower Hill, you don't hear the road OR the DLR even on the Visitors pontoon. Walking distance to Canary Wharf. Tesco Express across the A13

Re: A biased overview :)

With the good forecast for the bank holiday weekend my nephew Nick decided to take the 32ft family boat up to St Kats with his wife and two young daughters as crew. They had a successful trip via QBorough; the worst part was hanging around outside waiting to go into the lock on the Sunday when the tideway was heaving with traffic, including the high speed Clipper ferries, which made life quite uncomfortable.

They then had a memorable three days living on the boat and 'doing' London with the children – this included everything from Buckingham Palace and changing the Guard to Trafalgar Square and Hamleys – finishing on the wet Wednesday morning with a visit to The Tower. At £70 per night they thought it was well worth it. If they'd stayed a bit longer it would have been cheaper. And, as has been mentioned, seeing Tower Bridge and The Pool and the London skyline all lit up as you walk across from Tower Hill at night is really quite something.

The young crew went home on the train and Nick was joined by his more mature crew, me and his mum, for the return trip. The Dutch and Belgian yachts who exited with us early on Thursday morning were not impressed with the tediously slow locking out process but they told us that they had thoroughly enjoyed their first visit to St Kats.

I went the a couple of years a couple of years back as part of a club cruise, enjoyed our stay there and in particular being able to walk to work rather than the usual commute by train.

However, setting an alarm clock seemed unnecessary as the start of overflights and the DLR running used to wake me up each morning. (my berth was next to the office/toilets by the lock)

Not sure when you were in St Kats................but.
10 mins walk gets you into Wapping High St. and its many pubs.
A 5 mins walk gets you to Tower Bridge underground, less if moored in West Dock,The Tower of London and Tower Bridge
5 mins more gets you across the bridge and either
East into Shad Thames / Butlers Wharf, more pubs and resturants than you can shake stick at.
or
West and enjoy the walk along past City Hall,The Belfast, Hays Wharf, The Golden Hind, Shakespears Globe, The Tate Modern and beyond to the Eye and the Aquarium.Nearly forgot the Wobbly Bridge.
Always a few buskers around.to keep the kids amused with fire juggling or bubble antics

Must admit St Kats do not boast a TESCO EXPRESS, we will just have to make do with the rather fine wine section in the nearbye Waitrose. :)

Oh yes it does. Out through SE corner past the hotel and turn N up the road, just a few yards along.

Yes but, is the TESCO EXPRESS "wine" sold in bottles, as opposed to a cardboard Tetra pack with a little plastic tap and apparently now even available in a tin with a ring pull
Think we should be told :)

Last time we were there the lock keeper's office facilities were "being refurb'd" (in June of course, when they're not likely to be used... NOT. It took 15 minutes to walk to one of the toilet blocks, and then you probably had to wait for access. As an Olympic sprinter you may be able to get to Tower HILL station in 5 minutes, but Google Maps has the pedestrian route as either 9 or 10 minutes.

We're going to have to agree to disagree on ST Katz vs Limehouse

I know the area well (I walk through there fairly often, in addition to boat visits).

On balance, I prefer Limey.

On balance, you prefer St Kat's.

That's fine!
