Ouch!!!! (Don\'t look if you are squeamish!)

Those who have visited the Mercury Meet Forum will have seen my photo album from the weekend, and know that on the way home we struck an unmarked submerged object about 1 NM South of Hengistbury Head. Initially thought it was a lobster pot, as we ended up with some nylon warp wrapped around the starboard props.

Now that she is out of the water it seems that it must have been something much more substantial than that. Apologies in advance for the quality of these pics - they were taken by the marine engineer's camera phone. You don't want to look too closely anyway - you will see from the damage that we nearly ended up at the bottom of the briny. The starboard leg was mostly being held on by the rubbers of the bellows by the time she came out of the water.

This is what happens when you hit something very large and hard in a Targa 34 at 28 knots! We still don't know what it was that we hit as it never broke the surface at all, even when we were bobbing about trying to free the warp from the props.

As you will gather the required parts list alone is about the value of a small car, and its going to be a couple of weeks at least before we can get back in the water again.

Two bright spots in all of this nightmare:
Tony and his guys at Boatylicious have been immense in getting this sorted out - I really can't recommend them highly enough.
Steve and the claims department at Towergate Mardon have bent over backwards to expedite things - they also deserve my specific thanks in sorting it all out for me.

Ouch! Lets hope you can back on the water soonest. The Beerpan rocks are south of Hengistbury Head - do you think it could have been that tail of those that did the damage? Although you wouldn't have got nylon warp from the rocks

Re: Ouch!!!! (Don\'t look if you are squeamish!)

We pass that way quite a lot en route to the solent and back and I know Beerpan - we'd passed them a few minutes before well off to our starboard, and had also slowed down as we passed through the area that is worst for lobster pots too, before speeding back up again on getting clear.

Whatever we hit was big and hard enough to damage the props and skegs on both legs, and had trailing ropes attached as well - what exactly it could have been is something of a mystery. The hull has no damage at all, not even a scratch.

Re: Ouch!!!! (Don\'t look if you are squeamish!)

They are some sad photo's for sure. I know you have stated it was something solid, we can see that but I note that it stopped the stbd leg imediately as not all of the blades are damaged, unlike the port props. The follow on from that was the breaking of the steering yoke and trim ram end.

Your anodes looked alright though!

Thanks for the commiserations.

The starboard props got this around them

That seems to have stopped the props dead - the drive shaft is snapped clean across inside the leg with massive torsion marks. It also brought us from 28 knots to 0 pretty sharpish as well, but seems to have snapped the warp off from whatever it was attached to under the strain.

Yeah - I should have looked on the bright side - my anodes are still good - but she has only been back in the water since mid-March. Although we have done 33 hours in her since then - keeps the crud off. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Arrgghh, that's like something from a horror movie!
Thank goodness for shift cables: without it, I reckon that starboard drive would have come off completely...

Hope you get it sorted soon.

Cripes - scary stuff. That starboard drive looks so close to having been lost. Good news that the boat is undamaged, and you've now got some spare anodes /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Re: Ouch!!!! (Don\'t look if you are squeamish!)

how did you get back..?
last year, one of my legs went similar way, broke helmet and yoke.
mike wills crew were great, i was back in water in 6 days
look on bright side, the hulls ok and the mechanical bits can all be replaced
all the best

ehhh gods!!!!!! there but for the grace of etc......a mate had the same fate in 2006.......the prop caught the line and lifted the pot, which missed the prop, BUT, the ford 4 cylinder head used as the anchor smashed the leg to smithereans. .....sympathies for your probs. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

Ouch.

Glad all safe.

Another vote for Towergate from August last year catching a net mid channel they were superb then also.

After taking advice from SeaStart we managed to keep going on just the port engine at about 7 knots - squeaked back thru the 7:30 bridge by the skin of our teeth. It was PD close though, and the vibes from the port engine with the damage to the props had to be felt to be believed. They then met us half way across Holes Bay and assisted me back into the berth - with no starboard engine I had no PAS so it would have been too difficult to get back in unaided.

Re: Ouch!!!! (Don\'t look if you are squeamish!)

hi,

Arn't legs supposed to kick up on impact? or were they ripped off by the warps effectivley pulling the leg off from behind the boat?

Re: Ouch!!!! (Don\'t look if you are squeamish!)

It was a bit of both I think - the starboard leg was at -3 trim and was kicked up to +15 by the impact. I was able to raise the leg to get the warp off the props, but the trim indicator then refused to read that it had gone back down again. I could visually see that it was lower then that, but decided not to run the engine as the temp went through the roof as soon as I started it up.

I think that the impact/drag from the object before the warp parted must have nearly pulled the drive clean out of the back of the boat. Its lucky that the warp did part as otherwise the drive may well have come clean off leaving us in the briny and the boat at the bottom in very short order.

Re: Ouch!!!! (Don\'t look if you are squeamish!)

Wow! Bad luck. Thankfully you never sprang a leak. I would expect that sort of damage from a submerged container! Did you report it to the coastguard?

Still, as a fellow T34 owner I am relieved that even with the substantial damage that you sustained, you still managed to get back home safely.

My very best wishes and hope your back afloat soon! /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif
