I know I have just been reading the bbc site, what a shock.

I listened to Peely at work when working evening shift and home truths was always welcomed.

For all music lovers this is such a sad day, if it wasn't for JP I would not be listening to Captain Beefheart. Peel presented a documentary on the Captain and after that I was hooked.

No one else plays music like JP, there is no one to replace him. It makes me want to sell my radios as there will never be anything to compare.

RIP JP and best wishes to his family and friends.

Julian

just found this posted elsewhere, really sums Peely up>
The man had no equal, he had a voice that you could listen to for 24 hours a day. His humour made me laugh on the darkest of nights. He was a humble man who inspired generations with his love of music.

By all the Smashy and Nicey Djs crawling out of the woodwork,ie. Noel Edmonds on Radio 4.Bet you Peel could not stand the slime balls with their moronic pap songs and mindless presentation.Edmonds for one jumped the music ship to present crap tv as soon as the money slithered across the mixing desk.
And as for Mike read o gawd........blither....foam........./forums/images/icons/laugh.gif

Re: anybody else mildly infuriated...

Fair play to Noel Edmunds, he was on Radio 4 yesterday evening and had an interesting take. He admitted that people like himself were personality presenters, and that John Peel was a music afficionado, and took the piss out of him continually. He then went on to state that in his opinion, John Peel was one of the truely great personalities on the radio.

He also mentioned working on TV with JP, and JP stating to him that he didn't like the TV stuff, wasn't for him, and liked real broadcasting on radio far more.

One of the few DJ's that I could actually listen to. I started listening to him in the 60's. Someone's already mentioned Captain Beefheart. He'll be sorely missed and is totaly irreplaceable as there is absolutely no-one like him.

Crimes against Music.

Yes I heard it.It was that interview that set me off.Silly old me but I thought that to present a music show you should have some sort of vague interest in what you are playing. Can think of a handful of radio presenters worthy of note including Paul Jones Andy Kershaw Whispering Bob Charlie Gillete etc *.
All the rest were drones taking the industry pieces of silver.(*Sorry if missed anybody out)

Re: Crimes against Music.

Don't forget Paul Gambaccini, encyclopedic knowledge of music, and also a superb broadcaster

I'll admit Noel Edmunds wasn't the most knowledgeable music punter, but he did appeal to the masses, and pulled in huge numbers of listeners... which is how radio stations survive. He did appear to be quite open about his lack of knowledge, and his relationship with JP, for which he deserves at least a little credit. I don't much like the guy, but he did his best yesterday.

In my business I come into contact with many of today's dance music DJ's and enthusiasts. John was as respected (and genuinely so) amongst these people as he was amongst other genre's. Wonderful to have the gift of seeing the good in all music. A very famous DJ of the 60's and 70's asked me in September "And what of the old man of radio?" Of all people he wanted to know how JP was doing. Like another poster said, Rock on John.

Does anybody know if John played "You'd better watch out for the egg-plant that ate Chicago" more than the two times I heard?

Maybe some BBC employee with acces to the files could set the record straight.

B

PS He would probably have been even better without the fake scouse accent.

ReWarning. Bad language

>>PS He would probably have been even better without the fake scouse accent.<<

Knob heads exist the world over.

I'd be a bit more explicit, but Kim would vacuum up the aftermath and no one would ever realise what a twat you are.
