Ostende and red diesel - BEWARE

Re: Next best thing to firsthand experience.

That would be worth a go but "Diplomatic Immunity " would trump the Douane

There you go then buy the flag get the missus to dress up a bit and put a sash on dust of your old uniform and medals and you are good for Belgium, you might need a few elocution lessons as well.:p

Re: Next best thing to firsthand experience.

In Ostend one year customs checked that I had my ensign & ticked the fact on a sheet that they had. They were ticking items off a standard form at the time. Of course one can argue that one does not have it up between the hours of sunset & sunrise.
When French customs deliberately picked on me in Boulogne last year but ignored a dozen Dutch arrivals another British yacht took his off at night & accidentally "forgot" to put it back. He was not challenged

Think the MAB may give you away :D

Re: Next best thing to firsthand experience.

Picking on a Brit happened again in Boulogne a few weeks ago. We were the only other UK-flagged boat there. Reckoning we would be next, we headed into town pronto.
A few days later, in Fecamp, we saw the Men In Black heading down the pontoon towards us. Hey ho, here we go, we thought. But no, they went past us without a glance, and instead boarded the only German-flagged boat on the visitor pontoon.

Re: Next best thing to firsthand experience.

So i take it that is that then?
No news from RYA or CA.
Oh well, Norfolk Broads it is then.

Re: Next best thing to firsthand experience.

Dunno, after all the folks wrote to various people in Belgium even a response as to "why now", was nothing before June. Never mind.

I do wonder if they got Oostende voor anker out of the way first before the bureaucrats set the dogs on us

Re: Next best thing to firsthand experience.

This post appeared on scuttlebutt.

FYI I have just received an email from nieuwpoort marina stating:

Dear English sailors,

We just got the confirmation of our Belgium government that, from now on, there will be no control anymore towards red Diesel for sailors. In September, there will be a European conference, where the European ministers will take a common position on this matter. Know that the marinas in Belgium like to welcome all UK sailors, in the past, now and for the future.

You can forward this message to all our fellow yachtsman.

With kind regards,

Maarten

So you're all safe for a while yet!

Anyone got any more info?

Re: Next best thing to firsthand experience.

Seriously people would put their faith in an email from a marina? The Belgians said they would fine for red diesel, they are doing and seem very active. Just because a chap at VVW have been told it's OK you'd take that as a sign that it's go to Belgium? €500 must be very small change for you!

Re: Next best thing to firsthand experience.

Agree - but if it's for real I'm sure more substantive communications will emerge i.e. through CA and RYA. Has this been forwarded to them so they can take steps to verify?

Re: Next best thing to firsthand experience.

I have managed to find a website for Belgian customs with a contact page and asked how UK boat owners can comply with their demands.

Perhaps they will reply?

I have also contacted Oostend Vor Ankor giving them links to this and the CA advice... I wonder if someone can smell coffee?
