I was wondering about all the people racing across the atlantic single handed, several of whom are racing in the typical me & you sort of boat.... What do they do about insurance? Just risk being uninsured or do they pay for what I assume is massively expensive race insurance?

Just wondered....

Cheers

I managed to get cover at a reasonable rate. The catch was that I later found out the underwriters had a 'no claims paid' policy.

After spending lots of energy trying to insure for the Jester Challenge I asked what these Ocean Racing chaps did for insurance. The answer seemed to be that they didn't insure because of excessive premiums.

I suspect there is a vast difference, in financial arrangements, between the heavily sponsored types and the ones that go it alone.

To quote from recent official OSTAR correspondence:

[ QUOTE ]

I have again been in communication with Pantaenius in regard to entrants’ insurance. The underwriter, Mike Hulbert, has returned from holiday to find enquiries from competitors which he will convert into quotations soon. The terms for Third Party Liability cover for the 2009 race will be similar to 2005. Pantaenius should be able to insure hulls as well for crewed return passages. Pantaenius will have a stand at the Show so please pop along to see them if you need help in this regard. They may well offer you a drink from their bar.

In other words 3rd party only and not the rig, even if crewed.
