Orca's attacking spanish boats ?

Friend had something ram his rudder 3 times a couple weeks ago not far from Faro heading east. He said too big for a dolphin, he thought maybe a pilot whale but it had white on it as well. His crew in the cockpit had to go get stitched up where the tiller gashed his leg when it was pushed sideways. Boat was OK but think the wind vane got bent.

Interaction with these creatures is prohibited by royal decree ?
How would one interact ? ?

We were attacked as we were going south by Barbate in the middle of the night by 3 Orcas, two around 7m and the third around 6m. They rammed the boat five times over a 20 min period knocking the rudder wrenching the wheel out of my hands and knocking the alignment out by almost 20 degrees, luckily the rudder survived, others we have heard of have had to be towed in after the rudder was broken off.

Sounds like an orca with white bit

You say attacked, which seems a bit strong , they have been no known attacks of orcas on humans ,seems like dolphins in which they are in the dolphin family , they are being curious and playful clearly when a 10 tonne orca hits your boat it might not seem playful to you but to them it's all fun

It’s all relative, the famous voyaging family’s boat,a wooden hill yard was sunk by playful orcas in the pacific, don’t recall the name........and they ended up drifting about in a dinghy.......Robertsons

How do you know?
As posted no known wild attacks on humans by orcas so what reason would they have to attack a boat they are the apex predator of the sea and have no fear from any source, even with young they would not feel threatened by a floating flotsam called a boat !also they do not have the ability to stress test your hull and their playful curiosity, these are extremely intelligent animals being part of the dolphin family they do not want to throw you into the water to eat you that is a funny idea
Oh I am a biologist or was and my speciality was marine mammal with many bolt of courses studying them over the years and a boyhood fascination of orcas so not an expert but more than most

Guessing then ;)
Not sure how no attacks on humans is relevant, they just see a shape going through the water. Maybe they're feeling territorial, or curious, guessing like you ;)

You are as most humans putting a human element to the Orca (an animal)you are using words like attack , how many boats have sunk hitting a whale in the ocean , actually quite a few , they always say it is a sleeping whale , not true how would they know !!! , as any animal whales and dolphins are not perfect, they can get it wrong , they can come to close and hit something , it is called an accident , this orca was doing what all dolphins do they jump out of the water , sometimes it s because they are having fun or chasing prey, suspect that this poor chap got his timing wrong, Stop relating human emotions to animals this s why people call there dogs their little babes and dress them up
did this particular orca eat anyone of the boat NO!!! So what was its purpose to jump up and land on it . no purpose, as an intelligent animal it does not jump onto rocks so why Jump onto anther hard surface it does not know. also Orcas are not territorial in the sense of a perimeter of water , they will chase prey around the oceans they will follow prey in a certain area ,i.e the herring in Norway were they chase the herring into the fjords, as they migrate, .
This youtube video only allows those that have no understanding of marine mammals to add more doubt and come up with outrageous comments that are scientifically absurd
Like have said I have written many scientific papers on marine mammals with a healthy dose on Orcas

The posting by GHA is NOT of a orca it's a southern right whale breaching in Table bay Cape Town.

It was just bad timing. I know the boat which was used by a sailing school in Cape Town.

The most common place is Hermanus on the southern cape coast where southern right whale cone to carf before going back to the southern ocean to feed.

Personally not seen many orcas along the coast however they tend to be seen more frequently in places of heavy boat traffic like the Cape Peninsula, Plettenberg Bay, Algoa Bay and on the old whaling grounds.
